Au dire de la grand-mère, la nature est un monde peuplé d'esprits, dans lequel, secrètement, les montagnes s'animent (Le Géant Yêous), les nuages chantent (Le Nuage rose), les grenouilles et les fleurs conversent (La Reine Coax, Ce que disent les fleurs)... Même les statues et les tableaux, dans Le Château de Pictordu, prennent vie... Autant de voix que seuls les enfants, véritables héros de ces contes d'apprentissage, peuvent entendre: Emmi, le petit gardeur de cochon qui un jour disparaît après s'être approché d'un arbre réputé maléfique (Le Chêne parlant); ou encore le craintif Clopinet qui, fuyant son ogre de patron, finit par prendre son envol en se changeant en oiseau (Les Ailes de courage) ...

George Sand est une femme de lettres française.

Faisant scandale par sa vie amoureuse agitée et par ses tenues vestimentaires masculines, elle adopte un pseudonyme masculin dès 1829.

  • George Sand est en réalité le pseudonyme d'Amantine Aurore Lucile Dupin, plus tard, la baronne Dudevant lorsqu'elle se marie en 1822 avec le baron Casimir Dudevant, dont elle aura deux enfants.
  • Ses détracteurs les plus acharnés: Charles Baudelaire, Jules Barbey d'Aurevilly, Henri Guillemin n'ont retenu d'elle que cela, alors que George Sand était au centre de la vie intellectuelle de son époque, accueillant à Nohant-Vic ou à Palaiseau: Liszt, Marie d'Agoult, Balzac, Chopin, Flaubert, Delacroix, et Victor Hugo, conseillant les uns, encourageant les autres.
  • Outre son immense production littéraire, elle s'est illustrée par un engagement politique actif à partir de 1848, inspirant Alexandre Ledru-Rollin, participant au lancement de trois journaux: La Cause du peuple, Le Bulletin de la République, l'Éclaireur, plaidant auprès de Napoléon III la cause de condamnés, notamment celle de Victor Hugo dont elle admirait l'oeuvre et dont elle a tenté d'obtenir la grâce.
  • "La Mare au Diable", "Consuelo" et "Indiana", font partie de ses oeuvres les plus célèbres.
  • Auteure de romans, de nouvelles, de contes, de pièces de théâtre, d'une autobiographie, de critiques littéraires et de textes politiques, elle n'arrête pas d'écrire jusqu'à sa mort à l'âge de 71 ans. Victor Hugo déclara à sa mort: Je pleure une morte, je salue une immortelle ! .
