  1. Hans Christian Andersen (Odense, 2 avril 1805 - Copenhague, 4 août 1875) est un romancier, dramaturge, conteur et poète danois, célèbre pour ses nouvelles et ses contes de fées .
  2. Longtemps ignoré ou tourné en dérision dans son pays, où l'on a raillé son égocentrisme, il n'est reconnu tout d'abord qu'à l'étranger: en Angleterre où il rencontre Charles Dickens et où il devient le dandy de la saison 1, en Allemagne où il se lie avec Chamisso, en France où il se lie avec Heinrich Heine, Honoré de Balzac et Alphonse de Lamartine chez Virginie Ancelot.
  3. Ses nombreux voyages (Turquie, Italie, Suisse, Espagne) lui inspirent des récits qui constituent la meilleure partie de son oeuvre, après les contes. Mais ses compatriotes lui reprochent justement de parcourir le monde uniquement pour y trouver la célébrité, et ses récits sont mieux accueillis en Allemagne, où le roi lui décerne l'ordre de l'Aigle rouge en 1846, et dans d'autres pays d'Europe. Andersen a un talent particulier pour se faire des amis à l'étranger, ce qu'aucun autre écrivain scandinave ne réussit à faire. Alexandre Dumas l'appelle le bon, l'aimable poète danois .
