About the Book

The CONTENT OF CHARACTER takes a good hard look at what it means to be human, with our capacity for bigotry, love, creativity and conflict. It looks at the ways we love one another and explores the struggles we inflict upon ourselves and each other. The CONTENT OF CHARACTER tells a story about the middle ages of the 20th century and how it crashed into 2015. Joe Posey is the best basketball player in the country. David Posey suffers from Asperger's Syndrome. Uncle Bjorn is the larger-than-life logger and wild man from the mountains of Maine who saves their lives. It gets better: there are rumors that David and Joe's grandfather might be in the Mafia, their dad is a world-class racist, and their mother hides a bottle of whiskey over the sink. It's just another American family in other words. David tells the story of his childhood watching his brother play basketball. It was an amazing time; Joe was a new breed of player, a cross between Pistol Pete Maravich and Magic Johnson and he could throw no-look passes behind his back while spinning high and faking a dunk only to shovel the ball to a teammate for an easy shot. He was amazing. But there was trouble, lots of trouble. The times then were hard and racism was rampant. But racism cuts two ways and while Joe started varsity at point guard, some thought it was because he was white. David was having his own troubles. Everyone thought - because he acted so strangely - that he was retarded and they wanted to send him to 'that place'. No one was talking about autism back then and he had to battle for every coherent sentence he spoke. David learned to write out his thoughts and tell his story with the printed word and by the time he grew to be a man he felt he had discovered something profound.David learned that people are rarely racist. He discovered the idea of culturalism, a word he coined. He discovered that most people... well, that would be giving it away, wouldn't it? Just be sure that the story is told all the way to the end. And it is a good story: Viet Nam, US Marines, the Illinois Basketball Championship, old Martin guitars, gang fights, and two boy's battle against pure evil... This is really a great American novel and leaves every reader wishing the story would not end.Oh, and it's a love story, too.
