Pocos años después de finalizada la Guerra de los Seis Días, que transcurrió durante el mes de junio de 1967, se llevaron a cabo negociaciones entre las partes, que culminaron, en 1978, en los acuerdos de "Camp David", en los Estados Unidos de América.
La guerra enfrentó al joven estado de Israel en contra de una coalición árabe, sus atacantes, integrada por la República Árabe Unida (Egipto por entonces), Siria, Jordania e Irak. Luego de la aplastante victoria militar judía se instauró, en toda la tierra de Palestina, una nueva disposición geográfica y límites de territorios nacionales. Israel se había extendido pavorosamente por todo medio oriente, incorporando zonas como: los Altos del Golán, la península del Sinaí, la Franja de Gaza y, emulando al reino de David de antaño, en Cisjordania ocupó a pleno la llamada Jerusalén oriental.
Las agudas desavenencias entre las potencias beligerantes desembocaron en otra guerra que también culminó, luego de brutales batallas en tierra, mar y aire, en una nueva victoria israelí.
Fue entonces que, debido a los tratados de 1978, la nación hebrea devolvió el Sinaí a Egipto; mientras que los Altos del Golán y toda Jerusalén Este, pasaron a formar parte integral de la organización administrativa judía. Fueron considerados parte de Israel formalmente. En 2005, en un acto unilateral, se retira de los asentamientos de la Franja de Gaza.
Algunos generales hebreos en aquellos días, motivados por la euforia de su determinante éxito castrense, insinuaron, desde el mismo suelo de Jerusalén, que ya estaban en condiciones de derribar las mezquitas musulmanas, la Cúpula de la Roca y Al-Aqsa, para comenzar las obras de construcción de su Tercer Templo.
Intrincados procesos políticos, sumados a la amenaza de una guerra general en todo Oriente Próximo, hicieron que la Organización de Naciones Unidas, incluidos los Estados Unidos, convencieran al estado israelí de desestimar dichos planes, al menos por el momento.
Todo el mundo dio por descartado que el emplazamiento del Tercer Templo de Jerusalén debiera darse en el llamado "Monte del Templo".
