About the Book

Alors que Karl Philipp Moritz (1756-1793) est principalement connu pour son roman autobiographique Anton Reiser, ses autres oeuvres tendent à être ignorées en raison de leur extrême diversité. Outre Anton Reiser, Moritz est l'auteur de deux romans «symboliques» Andreas Hartknopf, eine Allegorie et Andreas Hartknopfs Predigerjahre, de deux récits de voyage et de nombreux essais sur le langage, la poésie, l'esthétique et la pédagogie. De 1783 à 1793 il fut rédacteur en chef du Magazin zur Erfahrungsseelenkunde, qui anticipe à mainte reprise la psychologie moderne.
Moritz s'avère être un penseur bien plus profond et cohérent qu'on ne le considère ordinairement lorsque l'on examine ses oeuvres selon leur structure et leur idée directrice. En effet, cette idée centrale est toujours celle de la nécessité absolue de dépasser l'isolement - assimilé à la mort - pour atteindre l'intégration et l'harmonie, synonymes de succès et de bonheur. La vie signifie le mouvement.
C'est ainsi qu'Anton Reiser abandonne les siens pour voyager à la recherche du succès, à l'école et au théâtre. Dans les romans de Hartknopf, l'harmonie se fait mystique et se comprend en termes de rédemption d'une humanité déchue et pervertie, opérée par un personnage christique. Dans les textes non-fictionnels, elle signifie l'équilibre parfait de la sonorité et du signifié ou, au niveau de l'oeuvre d'art, la somme harmonieuse des composantes unies en une totalité autonome et parfaite. De la sorte, les oeuvres de Moritz deviennent elles aussi parties d'un ensemble organique ayant pour raison d'être et pour finalité le progrès de l'individu, son autonomie et son accession à la maturité.
