About the Book

How does one articulate the structure of visibility itself? The author takes up this challenge as he elaborates new theoretical perspectives on visual hegemony, addressing the political processes of the photographic image. How does photography invoke an epistemology that subtly determines the scope and limit of what can be understood, said or done with images? Srivatsan uses gender, caste and class as frames of reference in these stimulating essays on the visual image. Srivatsan suggests provocatively that the single most important concept is that the photograph is a multiplicity of different things: a way of speaking, a way of showing, a recorded point of view, a piece of visible architecture, a force that is exerted on the viewer, a seduction, a coercion, an exercise of power that has effect on how the self is fashioned. Because of all these aspects it provides opportunities for struggle, resistance and change. He argues that photography must be studied in terms of all the practices and institutions that make use of the image as an integral part of their work in a modern culture. Towards this end, he discusses the different uses of photography in this book: advertisement, hoarding-painting, newsphotography, identification, documentary, and as a method of interrogating history. In The Photograph on a Rowdy sheet, Srivatsan theorizes that the Rowdy sheet is an instrument to realize Order, one that is used to contain the amorphous disorder that characterizes the lives of the underprivileged. The second essay, Newsphotography and the Discourse of the Real, discusses the dimensions of a nationalism and a civil control through photographs that appear in the newspapers. In 'Looking at Film Hoardings, the author evokes the battle between technology and the painters skills for dominance and control over the image. Two essays focus on photographs taken by Henri Cartier-Bresson. One, The Moneychanger attempts to make visible the force field that shapes the conditions of visibility in India today. Two, Gandhis funeral: Event or Statement is a philosophical essay on photography. Both essays are crucial to the understanding of Indian consciousness as it encounters its own image in Cartier-Bressons Western mirror. The Woman in the Advertisement: Historical Explorations Through a Type is an essay on how the Woman has been depicted in the advertisements that highlight the background of contemporary anxieties that are characteristic of urban Indian culture. The last essay, What is Photography? engages the reader with the discourse/architecture of the archive/world of photography and argues for an empowerment against contemporary oppressions.About the AuthorR.
