Si de algo es testimonio la metáfora del knock-out con la que el escritor Julio Cortázar caracteriza la recepción del cuento como contrapunto de la lectura de la novela, es que el escritor argentino no se enfoca en el texto literario en detrimento de la figura del autor, por lo que, buceando en las profundidades que ofrece su metáfora pugilística, cabe considerar el riguroso entrenamiento en el que el autor-luchador deja la piel antes de verse la cara con su contendiente.
Comienzo con esto último: algo cerca de diez años conocí a Isaac Morales en un taller literario en la Universidad Simón Bolívar, Sede del Litoral, y me consta que no ha venido dando golpes a ciegas ni al vacío, ni mucho menos ha desperdiciado su tiempo braceando con sombras, sino que ha obrado su arte por medio del ejercicio intenso y habitual. Me resulta gratificante leer que mucha de aquella experiencia ha sido volcada en las páginas que ha compuesto. A este respecto, el joven escritor Isaac Morales pasa a ocupar un lugar en una genealogía encabezada por el escritor chileno Roberto Bolaño, máximo artífice de obras en las que los talleres literarios son centros magnéticos, así como son nucleares las aventuras y, sobre todo, las desdichas del escritor, tal y como lo ejemplifican prototípicamente Los detectives salvajes, La literatura nazi en América, Estrella distante, El espíritu de la ciencia ficción, y 2666, entre otras obras.
Por lo que atañe al efecto deletéreo que provoca el golpe certero del knock-out, para seguir agotando la metáfora boxística, Isaac Morales ostenta una imaginación rotunda, en amplia medida tendente a la rama fantástica. No en vano una de sus fuentes de influjo es Edgar Allan Poe. Además, la visión contenida en sus ficciones también puede convocar el absurdo. Por otro lado, los personajes que transitan por este volumen de cuentos oscilan entre lo salvaje y la ternura. Y, por tratarse de una serie de historias cuyo ecosistema es el taller de escritura, como ya quedó apuntado, la metaficción reverbera en varias de las piezas.
Quizá por las manidas fórmulas del cine sobre historias del boxeo, al paso de la década del 90 mi entusiasmo por ficciones relacionadas con el tema se había esfumado. Sin embargo, filmes del nuevo siglo, entre ellos Golpes del destino (2005), de Clint Eastwood, y El hombre cenicienta (2005), de Ron Howard, dimensionaban el boxeo a la luz de la vida. Apenas unos años después, me interesé por el estudio de las metáforas conceptuales, campo que me descubrió las correspondencias mediante las cuales concebimos la vida en términos boxísticos. De manera que un escritor, según bien lo supo Cortázar, se forja a pulso para contar los ires y venires de la existencia misma. Dicho esto, recibo con gusto este conjunto de cuentos de un joven escritor que, con el pasar del tiempo, entendió que quien se entrega a la escritura no tiene otro destino que pujar para cristalizar su arte, y que tirar la toalla nunca será una opción.
