This book provides questions and answers for the second half of the grammar taught in
Complete Modern Chinese grammar - Beginner to Intermediate. The grammar is sufficient to
pass HSK 1, 2 and 3. In addition, the main aim of this book is to get students to use Mandarin for
both speaking and writing. The methodology considers repetition as a core requisite to
remember and thus use Mandarin both effectively and accurately.
There are 70 units, and each unit contains relevant questions directly pertaining to that unit
as well as previous ones. There is a constant focus on using newly obtained knowledge and
previous knowledge to build up a thorough understanding of how and when to use Mandarin.
Naturally, throughout the units, students should note that all the words that are taught are to
be learned, thus they can facilitate a reasonably robust vocabulary.
By the end of book 2, all students will be able to speak and write at a level that will surpass
everyday Mandarin. Indeed, it is expected that students should be fluent in expressing
themselves clearly and directly; discuss various kinds of topics; and be able to communicate
about events in the past, present and future.
Ultimately, it is hoped that students are not simply interested in passing the HSK test, but
trying to be able to converse with native-Mandarin speakers in real-life situations. The true
test for any language learner is using the language, not passing a test.
