Mediterranean Diet is a general term that refers to the traditional diet of southern Europe and the countries around the Mediterranean. The term Mediterranean Diet came into use in the early 1960s.
At that time, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) began publishing a series of reports that detailed the incidence of heart disease in various countries. The reports found that the rates of heart disease in southern European countries appeared to be lower than those of the U.S. and several other countries.
Research on the Mediterranean diet has found that this diet may help prevent heart disease. This diet provides significant antioxidant benefits, helps control blood sugar, and reduces levels of LDL cholesterol.
The Mediterranean Diet is relatively easy to follow. It recommends plenty of fruits and vegetables, fish, nuts, beans, grains, olive oil, wine, and overall, a reduced amount of red meat. The main concept of the Mediterranean diet is to eat local foods whenever possible, regardless of traditional diets.
The basis of this diet has more to do with the consumption of healthy fats than anything else. The American Heart Association recommends that individuals eat oils like those in a Mediterranean Diet (naturally occurring oils) when possible and to avoid trans fats, which are found in many baked goods, packed products, and fried foods.
