Indefensos, sin experiencia y dependientes en extremo de los adultos, los niños deberían contar con la protección serena y eficaz de los pediatras, pero como a lo largo de este libro veremos, su intervención es más perjudicial que beneficiosa. Basados en criterios médicos estandarizados y asumiendo siempre que lo que han estudiado es correcto, el especialista en niños (edad que ahora abarca desde el nacimiento hasta los 14 años) no se cuestiona las razones por las cuales la mayoría de los niños padecen las mismas enfermedades una y otra vez. Tampoco es capaz de admitir que no existen enfermedades crónicas, sino enfermedades no resueltas, la mayoría de ellas por no saber la causa real de su inicio. Del mismo modo, denominan como "enfermedades genéticas" a aquellas que también han padecido alguno de los padres, cuando en muchos casos se trata solamente de enfermedades adquiridas después del nacimiento. Si los padres padecen una enfermedad causada por repetidos errores en su forma de vivir o comer, su hijo con seguridad también la padecerá. Pero los padres, asustados por los cientos de mensajes que le obligan psicológicamente a poner incondicionalmente la salud de sus hijos en el médico, no intentan ni siquiera superficialmente aprender medicina elemental, ni siquiera el concepto de alimentación saludable, pues las frases "consulte a su médico", "no se automedique", son tan reiterativas que le anulan cualquier capacidad de raciocinio sereno. Convertida así casi toda la población mundial en sumisos pacientes y fieles creyentes de los múltiples beneficios que la medicina química dice tener, no intentan ni siquiera someramente pensar por sí mismos en cuestiones de salud. Y si acaso se atreven a contradecir, aunque sea de modo suave y sutil, al pediatra en una de las consultas "obligatorias", se encontrarán con la réplica inmediata del galeno, quien seguramente le preguntará irónico: "¿Es usted médico?" Obviamente la mayoría de los padres no son médicos titulados, pero tampoco son personas con tal retraso mental que no puedan entender porqué las personas enferman. Y si deciden no hacerle caso cuando la salud de su hijo no acaba de mejorar después de largas y peligrosas terapias, se encontrará con serias amenazas incluso legales, insistiéndole que con la salud de los niños "no se juega". Advertencia inútil, pues esa es precisamente la razón por la cual ese padre está cuestionando la eficacia de su médico. Lo cierto es que supone un milagro el que los niños consigan crecer aparentemente sanos año tras año, y me atrevería a asegurar que eso lo consiguen a pesar de los médicos, empeñados en llenarle el cuerpo de medicamentos desde que nacen. Han perdido tanto el miedo a los medicamentos que los administran sin ningún temor, convencidos de que los efectos secundarios admitidos por los laboratorios son pura anécdota y que el pequeño enfermo no tendrá ningún problema con ellos. Afortunadamente el metabolismo de los niños es tan intenso y vivaz que son capaces de sobrevivir a toda clase de errores, incluidos aquellos que los propios padres ejercen por mala información. No soy muy creyente, pero empiezo a darme cuenta que debe existir ese ángel de la guarda que dicen tienen todos los niños.
