About the Book

What do you get when a father, who came of age in the Black Power and Black is Beautiful Generation, attempts to raise a son coming of age in the Hip Hop Generation? You get two views of reality, psychological warfare, harmony, disharmony, hope, and ongoing transformation.

Coming of Age in the Hip Hop Generation: Warrior of the Void is a co-authored father-son memoir. It is written in the son's voice and covers the first 18 years of his life growing up African American and Puerto Rican in Brooklyn.

The void is the space that exists between who we are and who we are called to become. It is the space where we encounter so many flamboyant demons while our few guardian angels often remain hidden from sight. Demons often choose not to appear horrific; they most often choose to appear enchanting. Warrior of the Void presents Askia Akhenaton's faith-affirming journey through the first 18 years of the void.

Come inside for an intimate and unique examination of: innocence and harmony; love and heartbreak; sex education and mis-education from parents, teens, the Internet, teachers, and musicians; disharmony and the fight for independence and self-identity; racial profiling and stop-and-frisk encounters with the police; mind manipulation to create a pervasive and negative image of black and Latino males; American his-story vs. history; the spell of video games, music, sports, and social media; 12th grade senioritis and its cure; and God, faith, and family.
About the Author: Askia Akhenaton Davis is the 19-year-old son of Dr. Davis. He is a lover of spoken word, slam poetry, lyrics, hip hop, and various other genres of music. He reads music and plays the piano and clarinet. Askia is a 2010 graduate of Benjamin Banneker Academy in Brooklyn. At Banneker he was a successful student in honors English classes and the starting power forward and most valuable player, leading Banneker's basketball team to the semifinals of the Public Schools Athletic League in 2010. Askia Akhenaton is currently a student in City University of New York, majoring in mass communications. He is active in several local basketball leagues. His professional goals include sports broadcasting, teaching, and coaching.

Dr. Askia Davis was born in rural Georgia. At age 16 he lived independently in New York City when he stumbled upon The Autobiography of Malcolm X which transformed his view of the world. At age 17 he entered Brooklyn College and joined Lumumba Shakur in the Black Panther Party (of the 1960s) in Harlem. He served as the Panther's Lieutenant of Education. At age 18, while leading demonstrations of Blacks and Latinos demanding open admissions and the creation of Black and Latino Studies at Brooklyn College, he was arrested along with 18 other students. He faced 228 years maximum if convicted of all charges. Askia would go on to receive a doctoral degree in education from Columbia University and to serve as senior assistant to three NYC Schools Chancellors. He was Superintendent of schools in Harlem, and Deputy Regional Superintendent in the Bronx for 140 schools with 99,000 students.
