Segun el comun parecer de las personas capaces de voto en materias de literatura, tres cosas necesita la edróion buena de un libro clásico: la historia del autor, la de sus obras y el juicio de ellas: una biografía, una noticia bibliogrática y un exámen _c_¡ tico. A muy leve costa se puede cumplir tal precepto, cuando se trata de reimpri mir las comedias de Don pedro cai nsnou DE LA bar_ca: hecha esta bien 6 mal, su biografia. Y publicados hay har tos dictámenes propicios y adversos al escritor la lista de sus producciones, arreglada por orden rigoroso de tiempos, no puede hacerse completa. Se nos ha conservado la fecha. De algunas; Otras, que recuerdan sucesos coritemporáneo, s la traen en su propio contexto; de las restantes, aunque sepamos el año de una impresión, ignoramos cuándo fueron escritas o representadas por primera vez. Salieron á luz, como expresamente dice en su Biblioteca Nicolas Antoniox parte sueltas; y parte en coleccion, _ siendo muy probable que las coleccionadas hubie ran sido antes impresas separadamente; pero de aquellas ediciones originales, raro es el ejemplar que se halla, y aun los que aparecen, aprovechan muy poco en razon de que no suelen traer año, pueblo, ni oficina de la impresion falla notable por la cual no podemos contestar -v1ct_oímsamente á los eruditos franceses, que 'ase guran_ hoy con grande ufanía que no fué Pedro Corne1lle quien imitó en su Heraéhó como generalmente se había' creído hasta ahora, la comedia de caideron titulada En esta vida todo es verdad y todo menlzra, sino que por el contrario nuestro poeta imitó en esa composicion al autor de Cmna y de Políeucto. Redúcese pues 'nuestra tarea casi exclusivamente en esta ocasion a reunir y trasladar escritos ajc enos, para no repetir lo que está ya dicho. Y aunque se leería mejor, traducida en lenguaje mas llano, la biografia de cal'deron ordenada per Den Juan de Vera 'la$is y Villarroel que es la que se ponia entodás las ediciones del autor que reimprimimos; como al Cabo es la mas autorizada, como no podríamos hacer mas que renovaula en su mayor parte, corrigiendo sí los yerros que notó en ella Don Gaspar Agustin de Lara; la hemos adoptado aqu¡, agregándole alguna noticia, de poco bulto á la verdad, que pm otro lado hemos adquirido... La consuderac¡on ya expuesta de sernos_ _imposible decir nada nuevo, debería impedirnos tratar del mérito respectivo de las obras de Cu.omaon pt que habiendo tomado los preliminares de este volúmen con veinte artículos de diez v ocho plumas españolas(muy ilustres algunas), que for man una como galería crítico his tórica desde los tiempos de calderon hasta el presente, difícil sería dar con un pen samiento que allí no estuviese ya formulado: con declarar que el xvn'1, escrito por el Ilustrísimo Señor Don Antonio Gil de Zárate, es el que mejor nos parece, ahorrábamos tiahajo el lector y noso_tros. Pero juzgaron tan desa0ertadamente en nuestro concepto calderon DE LA ban0a ciertos humanistas y poetas del siglo pasado, que no pode rnos consentir se lean sus equivocadas censuras, hasta haber hecho al lector alguna advertencia, para que así, con pleno conoeimiento de causa, los juzgue á ellos v nos ¡u7gue_ a nosotros Vamos pues á decirle algo de lo que pensamos de calderon.
