Dans les premiers jours du mois d'octobre 1840., le colonel sir Thomas Nevil, Irlandais, officier distingué de l'armée anglaise, descendit avec sa fille à l'hôtel Beauveau, à Marseille, au retour d'un voyage en Italie. L'admiration continue des voyageurs enthousiastes a produit une réaction, et, pour se singulariser, beaucoup de touristes aujourd'hui prennent pour devise le nil admirari d'Horace. C'est à cette classe de voyageurs mécontents qu'appartenait miss Lydia, fille unique du colonel. La Transfiguration lui avait paru médiocre, le Vésuve en éruption à peine supérieur aux cheminées des usines de Birmingham. En somme, sa grande objection contre l'Italie était que ce pays manquait de couleur locale, de caractère. Explique qui pourra le sens de ces mots, que je comprenais fort bien il y a quelques années, et que je n'entends plus aujourd'hui. D'abord, miss Lydia s'était flattée de trouver au-delà des Alpes des choses que personne n'aurait vues avant elle, et dont elle pouvait parler avec les honnêtes gens, comme dit M. Jourdain. Mais bientôt, partout devancée par ses compatriotes, et désespérant de rencontrer rien d'inconnu, elle se jeta dans le parti de l'opposition. Il est bien désagréable, en effet, de ne pouvoir parler des merveilles de l'Italie sans que quelqu'un ne vous dise: Vous connaissez sans doute ce Raphaël du palais ***, à *** C'est ce qu'il y a de plus beau en Italie. - Et c'est justement ce qu'on a négligé de voir. Comme il est trop long de tout voir, le plus simple c'est de tout condamner de parti pris. À l'hôtel Beauveau, miss Lydia eut un amer désappointement. Elle rapportait un joli croquis de la porte pélasgique ou cyclopéenne de Segni, qu'elle croyait oubliée par les dessinateurs. Or lady Frances Fenwich, la rencontrant à Marseille, lui montra son album, où, entre un sonnet et une fleur desséchée, figurait la porte en question, enluminée à grand renfort de terre de Sienne. Miss Lydia donna la porte de Segni à sa femme de chambre, et perdit toute estime pour les constructions pélasgiques.....
About the Author: Prosper Mérimée, né le 28 septembre 1803 à Paris et mort le 23 septembre 1870 à Cannes, est un écrivain, historien et archéologue français. Issu d'un milieu bourgeois et artiste, Prosper Mérimée fait des études de droit avant de s'intéresser à la littérature et de publier dès 1825 des textes, en particulier des nouvelles, qui le font connaître et lui vaudront d'être élu à l'Académie française en 1844. En 1831, il entre dans les bureaux ministériels et devient en 1834 inspecteur général des Monuments historiques. Il effectue alors de nombreux voyages d'inspection à travers la France et confie à l'architecte Eugène Viollet-le-Duc la restauration d'édifices en péril comme la basilique de Vézelay en 1840, la Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris en 1843 ou la Cité de Carcassonne, à partir de 1853. Proche de l'impératrice Eugénie, il est fait sénateur en 1853 et anime les salons de la cour, par exemple avec sa fameuse dictée en 1857. Il publie alors moins de textes littéraires, pour se consacrer à des travaux d'historien et d'archéologue et initiant, à partir de 1842, un classement des monuments historiques auquel la Base Mérimée créée en 1978 rend hommage
