Deuxieme age: l'ecolier geignard, avec son cartable et son visage propre du matin, rampant a contrecoeur comme un escargot jusqu'a l'ecole. Troisieme age: l'amoureux, soupirant telle une chaudiere et composant une ritournelle pitoyable en hommage aux sourcils de son amante. Quatrieme age: le soldat, farci de jurons bizarres, poilu comme une bete, fier, brutal et soupe au lait, cherchant la reputation aussi soudaine qu'evanescente jusque dans la gueule des canons. Cinquieme age: le juge, avec une belle bedaine ronde, fourree de bons chapons, oeil grave et barbe en pointe, achalande de sages maximes et de cliches du jour: ainsi il joue son role. Sixieme age: il passe a la culotte decharnee et aux pantoufles du vieux fou, lunettes au nez, bourse au cote, les hauts-de-chausses de sa jeunesse bien conserves, mais bien trop larges pour des jambes atrophiees, sa grosse voix d'homme, retournant au timbre chatre de l'enfance, a le son de la flute. Septieme age: la derniere scene, qui met fin a ce recit etrange et tumultueux, est la seconde enfance et le simple oubli, sans dents, sans yeux, sans gout, sans rien.
