Le site exceptionnel et stratégique d'Istanbul a permis à la ville de se développer de manière constante depuis les premiers siècles de l'ère chrétienne, tout en échappant aux invasions destructrices. Cependant les fréquents tremblements de terre et les nombreux incendies en ont remodelé l'aspect général maintes fois. L'antique Byzance est devenue La Nouvelle-Rome lorsque Constantin-le-Grand en fit la capitale de l'Empire romain en 330, mais dès le siècle suivant elle prit le nom-même de l'empereur, soit Constantinopolis, la ville de Constantin. Elle le garda jusqu'en 1930, quand la nouvelle République turque, rompant avec le lourd passé politique de la ville, lui attribua officiellement son nom actuel. Sept ans plus tôt, Istanbul avait déjà perdu son rôle millénaire de capitale, sans perdre toutefois son rang de principale ville d'Europe orientale. Capitale de l'Empire romain devenu byzantin pour les Occidentaux, Constantinople rayonna également sous les Ottomans à partir de 1453. Sans cesse convoitée, elle ne sera occupée qu'en 1919 par les vainqueurs du premier conflit mondial qui se partagèrent la dépouille d'un empire définitivement perdu. Occupée et humiliée, la ville mettra peu de temps avant de fasciner à nouveau l'Europe envoûtée par l'exotisme d'un continent qui s'achève, mais qui est son préambule pour un Proche Orient contemplatif et parfois envieux de la remarquable situation d'Istanbul.
