"Encyclopedic Coached by the Course overflows with advice, lessons and authoritative knowledge gleaned from Moren's decades-long quest to lower his scores...Those inclined to dissect their round for ways to save strokes should absolutely find room on their bookshelves for Moren's work."Colorado Avid Golfer Magazine, Winter 2021
Coached by the Course walks the reader through 400+ tips covering all facets of golf to save strokes and lower scores. It starts with Concepts impacting most golf shots, which then are applied progressively to Putting, Chipping, Sand, and Full Swing. Additional chapters include Special Situations, Course Management, Mental Game, Practice, Equipment, and Tournament Play. The book is perfect for recreational golfers and those recording handicap scores, while especially helpful to junior player development.
The guide was compiled from 20 years of author notes taken on the golf course in tournament, handicap, charity, and casual rounds. After sorting and digitizing, these notes were augmented with contributions from touring professionals, full time instructors, elite amateurs, handicap amateurs, league players, and even medical personnel. Score-saving tips were stress tested on the course in stroke and match play tournaments, Pro-Ams, and other formal rounds.
Author John W. Moren, a long time student of the game, steadily lowered his handicap from high double digits to low single digits. He summarizes the book's theme with two quotes:
"The quickest way to save golf strokes is by improving your short game. The enduring way to save golf strokes is by improving your long game. The efficient way to do both is by improving your golf knowledge."
"Do what others don't and get what others won't."
Many tips require little or no practice, while mini-lessons benefit from sessions off the course to gain confidence before going live, which include:
- Developing a simple putting stroke that rolls where you aim
- Green reading fundamentals to aim at the right spot
- Two different chipping strokes to get the ball close
- Spinning chip shots and irons
- Wedge magic that turns three strokes into two
- Escaping the sand without wasting strokes
- The two common full swings for consistent ball striking
- Multiple ways to curve shots either direction
- The reason many swing tips you tried did not work
True life experiences, backstories, quotes, humorous events, trivia, disclaimers, and alerts augment an entertaining text. The concluding chapter lists resourceful books, DVDs, smartphone apps, and golf tools. The 300+ page print version contains over 100 photographs and detailed 12 page Table of Contents to find topics quickly. The Kindle version includes that full manuscript with fewer photos and standard Table of Contents.
