En cierto sentido, Cnut el Grande estaba prácticamente destinado a la grandeza, aunque sólo fuera porque procedía de una distinguida familia real danesa. El padre de Cnut era Sweyn Forkbeard, y su abuelo Harald Bluetooth, ambos reyes prominentes y legendarios de Dinamarca. Por su parte, su madre era viuda del rey sueco Erik el Victorioso, hija del duque polaco Mieszko y hermana del rey polaco Boleslav Chrobry (Lund 1999: 28).

Gracias a sus antecedentes y a sus propias habilidades, Cnut se convirtió en el más destacado de los reyes daneses de Inglaterra (desde 1016), pero también fue en ocasiones rey de Dinamarca (desde 1018-9), Noruega (desde 1028) y partes de Suecia (después de 1026). Durante su reinado, unió Inglaterra, protegió Dinamarca y tuvo mucha influencia en toda Escandinavia, una hazaña notable que consiguió mediante cuidadosas alianzas y diplomacia, aunque la mayoría de las veces mediante la fuerza directa. Por ello, Cnut ha sido considerado el mayor rey anglosajón de Inglaterra, a pesar de que en realidad no era anglosajón. Murió en 1035, poco antes de la conquista normanda de Inglaterra por Guillermo el Conquistador.
