Premiere femme a avoir ete admise a l'ENS de la rue d'Ulm puis a l'Institut for Advanced Study de l'Universite de Princeton, Clemence Ramnoux a contribue de facon significative au renouvellement des etudes presocratiques en France, a une epoque ou ce domaine de recherche etait fortement limite par la perspective historique qui reduisait les penseurs archaiques a une entree dans la matiere des grands textes de la philosophie. En faisant sienne la lecon du philosophe americain Harold Cherniss, elle soumit les sources doxographiques des premiers penseurs a une lecture critique, afin de mettre au jour les raisons sous-jacentes de la transmission, tout en ouvrant cette matiere a une interrogation originale. Il s'agissait d'analyser les relations de la philosophie naissante avec la pensee religieuse contenue dans les theogonies et dans les cosmologies les plus anciennes. En effet, l'oeuvre entiere de cette penseuse remarquable a ete consacree a une question majeure de la philosophie ancienne et de la philosophie tout court, celle du passage du mythos au logos, question toujours cruciale et toujours ouverte qui mene aux racines de la pensee rationnelle, a ses conditions de possibilite, a ses relations complexes avec la pensee religieuse et traditionnelle. A ce titre, le nom de Clemence Ramnoux doit etre associe a ceux de Jean-Pierre Vernant et de Pierre Maxime Schul, qui dans le meme tournant developpaient et approfondissaient selon des approches differentes le debat ouvert en Angleterre par les travaux de F. M. Cornford, notamment par son ouvrage From Religon to Philosophy (Cambridge 1913). Eleve de Georges Dumezil, proche de Jean Wahl, de Pierre Maxime Schul et de Gaston Bachelard ainsi que de remarquables hellenistes comme Andre-Jean Festugiere, Clemence Ramnoux put developper une methode de recherche adaptee a un objet aussi complexe, en alliant lhistoire des religions, la philosophie et la philologie. Par ailleurs, sa reelaboration de la methode de travail de Georges Dumezil, qu'elle sut appliquer a l'etude exclusive du domaine grec, fut determinee par son interet prononce pour la psychanalyse, notamment pour l'anthropologie religieuse elaboree par Sigmund Freud a partir de Totem et Tabou jusqu'a L'Homme Moise. L'une des theses principales de Clemence Ramnoux est que la mythologie est le cadre qui a permis l'apparition et le developpement de la philosophie. L'originalite de sa position, ce qui la distingue des autres recherches dans le meme domaine, c'est quelle fonde sa demonstration sur l'etude semantique des textes. Comme elle a pu le montrer, certaines structures fondamentales de la pensee chez Heraclite, Parmenide et Empedocle, notamment les couples des contraires, derivent a travers une serie de changements semantiques identifiables des couples antithetiques de Puissances qui structurent les theogonies et les cosmogonies archaiques. Par ailleurs, par ses etudes comparees sur les anciennes cosmogonies, qui portent sur un vaste corpus de temoignages, depuis les plus archaiques jusqu'aux plus tardifs, Clemence Ramnoux a relance en France l'interet pour les cosmogonies orphiques, remises au gout du jour par les decouvertes papyrologiques les plus recentes. Clemence Ramnoux nous a laisse des etudes remarquables sur les penseurs presocratiques, Heraclite ou Parmenide, sur l'ancienne doxographie, notamment sur le temoignage de Simplicius, dont elle contribua a montrer la valeur pour la reconstitution de la pensee de Parmenide, d'Empedocle et d'Anaxagore, sur Hesiode, sur les anciennes cosmogonies et sur la religion de la Grece archaique. Elle a indique le chemin d'une pratique de lecture fine ou a plusieurs strates comme elle aimait a definir sa recherche, s'enrichissant de l'apport de plusieurs disciplines, afin de repondre a des questions capitales de la pensee philosophique, a partir de l'etude de textes aussi enigmatiques que ceux des premiers penseurs de la Grece.

Cette brillante helleniste, et disciple de Dumezil, a consacre sa recherche et ses reflexions aux auteurs presocratiques tels Heraclite, Empedocle ou Parmenide et a la pensee religieuse de la Grece archaique. Contributor Biography - French Rossella Saetta Cottone, helleniste, directeur de recherches au CNRS (Centre Leon Robin, Sorbonne Universite), consacre ses recherches aux poetiques antiques. Contributor Biography - French Alexandre Marcinkowski, historien de formation, a recemment revise la nouvelle edition augmentee du classique d'Erwin Rohde, Psyche.
