About the Book

T

Thomas earned a BA in English Literature from College of the Holy Cross in 1971 and went on to study law. He was one of the first black students admitted to an all-white institution, Yale Law School. His success was owing to his color and the universities' attempts to attract black students rather than his own devotion, Thomas would later say. Thomas joined the Missouri bar in 1974. He aided Senator John C. Danforth in 1977. After four years with Danforth, Reagan appointed Thomas Assistant Secretary of Education for Civil Rights. After serving for one year as the Chairman of the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). Thomas was selected to the DC Circuit by President George H. W. Bush in 1990 following eight years at the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). Intense Senate hearings tested Thomas' patience. Anita Hill, a former EEOC staffer, accused him of sexual misconduct. Ms. Hill was summoned to testify before the Senate. Thomas vehemently refuted all claims. In October 1991, the Senate finally confirmed Thomas. He is currently the only African-American justice among the US Supreme Court Justices. He is known for not interrogating during oral arguments. As opposed to asking questions to express their opinions, Thomas stays mute. He is the most conservative judge. His conservative views pushes, if not exceeds, Antonin Scalia's originalist beliefs on numerous subjects. His birthplace is a little town outside of Savannah, Georgia. His father abandoned him, his sister, and their mother within two years. It was tough for his mother, a single working mother, to make ends meet when Thomas' father died. After a fire drove his family from their home, Thomas was left with his maternal grandfather, who became the most influential figure in his life. Thomas was admitted to a catholic school when he was sixteen to become a Catholic priest, being the first African-American student, Thomas felt the obligation of being the only one of his race in the school. But he faced with racial bullying at school. He began his undergraduate studies at Conception Seminary in 1967. Thomas was upset with the Church's neutrality regarding civil rights concerns at the time.
