Mario Vargas Llosa expone algunas ideas centrales sobre el concepto de civilización, a nivel discursivo. Estas definciones son importantes para entender mejor sus trascendentales narrativas de la civilización y la barbarie en Perú y en otras regiones del mundo. En entrevista con Enrique Krauze, el escritor del Boom sostiene que "la civilización es la marcha lenta a lo largo de la historia para que el individuo se emancipe de esa placenta materna que es la comunidad, la sociedad, el colectivo" ("Conversación" 44). De esta forma, el individuo se desarrolla en una sociedad determinada y su crecimiento se funda en la "autonomía", "los derechos humanos" y "todos los grandes avances que ha traído la civilización" sin dejar de mostrar un sentido de pertenencia a una comunidad como supremo valor, es decir, aquello que Karl Popper llama el "espíritu de la tribu" (44). Por ello, los hombres y las mujeres adquieren más libertad como individuos y se vuelven más civilizados, en la medida que la sociedad avance más en la política, la religión, la nacionalidad, el sexo y otros campos del saber humano, según Vargas Llosa. Cuando se busca mejorar a la sociedad, muchos individuos construyen utopías y colectivismos en los libros o en los grupos humanos a la lo largo de la historia de la humanidad, lo cual es otro de los temas principales de las novelas del escritor sudamericano.

En suma, el grado de avance de una civilización se basa en la convergencia de la soberanía y la firme identidad personal del individuo con el buen desarrollo de las instituciones de la civilización, dentro de una sociedad, nación o región del planeta. En contraparte, la transgresiones al orden social y legal constituyen la barbarie. De este modo, la fundacional dicotomía cultural de civilización y barbarie ha aparecido en distintas obras, autores y corrientes literarias en la historia de la literatura hispanoamericana moderna, desde que Domingo Faustino Sarmiento la planteó de manera integral en 1845 en su brillante estudio Civilización y barbarie. Vida de Juan Facundo Quiroga. En la segunda mitad del siglo XX, Mario Vargas Llosa es uno de esos esenciales escritores hispanoamericanos, porque cristaliza dicho tema central en sus obras, de la misma manera que los ensayistas del siglo XIX y los novelistas del Regionalismo abordaron dicho binomio antitético del saber y la ilustración, que determina el grado de modernización económica y cultural de las naciones libres e independientes de la América Hispana.

Con estas premisas, se analiza la postura intelectual de Marios Vargas Llosa en torno a la dictomia civilizacion y barbarie en las siguientes cuatro novelas: La casa verde (1966) El hablador (1987), Lituma en los Andes (1994) y El sueño del celta (2010).
