About the Book

This is a story about Mary, number one fan of the hottest cult vampire detective TV show, City by Night...until it becomes all too real. An accident with the Craft Services truck sends her hurtling into the world of the show, and Mary is thrilled-who wouldn't want to live alongside their favorite TV characters? Unfortunately, living in TV-land isn't all that Mary thought it would be. The charm fades when Mary realizes that the extras still don't speak, the matte paintings don't become real, and all the infuriating flaws in the writing are just amplified when you have to try to interact with the shallow characters. And then, of course, the lead character Leondre DuNoir falls for her! Sure, fine, he's hot...but he's also a bit, well, poorly written. And his admiration comes with its own set of problems: Antonio, Leondre's psychotic stalker, has a habit of killing off the girls-of-the-week. Not only is Mary disillusioned with what she thought was a lush world until she had to try to maneuver in it, now she's about to be murdered by one of the stupidest clichés in the history of television in a world that, pardon the pun, totally sucks. A loving satire of the Toronto film industry, vampire-cop television, and what it really means to be a "fan" from award-winning science fiction author J.M. Frey. "Funny, light-hearted, and full of cracks about the tropes of genre television, CITY BY NIGHT is an awesome read-and the ending is amazing!" - Sam Maggs, author of The Geek Girl's Guide to the Galaxy "J.M. Frey deftly creates an intriguing story in CITY BY NIGHT. I enjoyed reading the experience of what can happen when fiction becomes fact." - Linda Wisdom, award-winning author of over 100 novels "Part sassy exposé, part heart-pounding thriller, and all about Mary CITY BY NIGHT will drop you into a world where the only thing real is courage. Highly recommended." - Julie E. Czerneda, author of Rift in the Sky "With her love bite to the vampire romance genre, J.M. Frey manages a level of delightful satire and female empowerment that Twilight and its ilk never approach." - Liana K. and Ed the Sock, co-hosts of I Hate Hollywood "A wryly humorous yet touching romp through the fourth wall!" - Stephanie Bedwell-Grime, author of The Vampire Next Door "CITY BY NIGHT is a creepy-cool page-turner with many memorable characters. It's a sexy tale of creator trapped inside creation that's at times angsty, often hilarious, and will leave you wanting more." - Leigh Moore, author of The Truth About Faking "CITY BY NIGHT resides in an unlikely little hollow where Purple Rose of Cairo intersects with Interview with the Vampire. A fun examination of fan obsession and meta-analysis of television tropes. Frey excels at bringing a casual, real-person feeling to her narrative tone, conveying her protagonists with genuineness and soul." - Gabrielle Harbowy, author and editor of When the Hero Comes Home "Damn, that was fun!" - Peter Salomon, author of Henry Franks
About the Author: J.M. is an author, fanthropologist and professional smartypants. She studied fan fiction and Mary Sues for her Master's degree, and loves blurring the lines between academia and fiction. She's appeared in podcasts, documentaries, and on television to discuss all things geeky. She also has an addiction to scarves, and tea. You can find her at www.jmfrey.net.
