La historia se construye a partir de cuatro personajes: Francisco José, conocido como el cisne falso, su padre, Rodrigo Fidel, un empresario exitoso y millonario, y su madre, Francisca Liomar. Todos ellos están de cierta forma conectados con La Madame, una bruja que ofrece más que la lectura del futuro a sus clientes. Todo comienza por el pacto que realiza Francisca Liomar y Rodrigo Fidel con La Madame, la cual les da todo lo que pidan a cambio de ser la madrina de su primer hijo. Francisca Liomar es una joven fea, horrenda e ignorante que accede cabalmente a este pacto porque quiere convertirse en la mujer más bella y admirada del país. Rodrigo Fidel busca poder y éxito, pero es incauto ante este pacto. Después de conversar con La Madame, accede. Estos hechos iniciales empiezan a configurar la vida y personalidad de Francisco José. Su madre es muy vanidosa y esto hizo que se olvidara del cuidado de su hijo, dejándolo en el olvido; lo mismo sucede con su padre, que busca incansablemente superar a sus contrincantes. De esta forma, hereda la intolerancia y la indolencia. En un hecho trágico, ocurrido a sus diez años, su madre le hace una enorme cicatriz en su rostro con un espejo mágico. Francisco José había nacido siendo bello, pero este hecho marcó su vida. Después de este incidente, nunca más se volvería a mirar en un espejo o en algún objeto que reflejara su rostro. Así creció y con el tiempo un odio enfermizo hacia su madre hizo que empezara a buscar venganza en mujeres inocentes de hermoso rostro. La novela abarca toda la vida de Francisco José y parte de la vida de su madre y de su padre. Toma elementos de brujería para combinarlos con la creencia popular de que todo se puede conseguir con magia. Además, describe lo ruin y bajo de una sociedad basada en la creencia de que la belleza lo es todo. A partir de ahí, se desprende una crítica sutil sobre la esclavitud de las personas hacia el espejo.
