About the Book

Alfred Victor Vigny puis comte de Vigny, né le 27 mars 1797 à Loches, et mort le 17 septembre 1863 à Paris 8e, est un écrivain, romancier, dramaturge et poète français.Figure influente du romantisme, il écrit parallèlement à une carrière militaire entamée en 1814 et publie ses premiers poèmes en 1822. Avec la publication de Cinq-Mars en 1826, il contribue au développement du roman historique français.Extrait: Connaissez-vous cette contrée que l'on a surnommée le jardin de la France, ce pays où l'on respire un air si pur dans les plaines verdoyantes arrosées par un grand fleuve ? Si vous avez traversé, dans les mois d'été, la belle Touraine, vous aurez longtemps suivi la Loire paisible avec enchantement, vous aurez regretté de ne pouvoir déterminer, entre les deux rives, celle où vous choisirez votre demeure, pour y oublier les hommes auprès d'un être aimé. Lorsque l'on accompagne le flot jaune et lent du beau fleuve, on ne cesse de perdre ses regards dans les riants détails de la rive droite. Des vallons peuplés de jolies maisons blanches qu'entourent des bosquets, des coteaux jaunis par les vignes, ou blanchis par les fleurs du cerisier, de vieux murs couverts de chèvrefeuilles naissants, des jardins de roses d'où sort tout à coup une tour élancée, tout rappelle la fécondité de la terre, l'ancienneté de ses monuments, et tout intéresse dans les oeuvres de ses habitants industrieux. Rien ne leur a été inutile: il semble que, dans leur amour d'une aussi belle patrie, seule province de France que n'occupa jamais l'étranger, ils n'aient pas voulu perdre le moindre espace de son terrain, le plus léger grain de son sable. Vous croyez que cette vieille tour démolie n'est habitée que par les oiseaux hideux de la nuit ? Non. Au bruit de vos chevaux, la tête riante d'une jeune fille sort du lierre poudreux, blanchi sous la poussière de la grande route; si vous gravissez un coteau hérissé de raisins, une petite fumée vous avertit tout à coup qu'une cheminée est à vos pieds;
