Cinq semaines en ballon Jules VERNE (1828 - 1905) Un savant, Samuel Ferguson, accompagné de son domestique Joe et de son ami Dick Kennedy entreprend de traverser le continent africain - alors incomplètement exploré - à l'aide d'un ballon gonflé à l'hydrogène. Il a en effet inventé un dispositif qui, en lui évitant de perdre du gaz ou de devoir jeter du lest pour régler son altitude, autorise les plus longs voyages. Ce voyage est supposé relier les explorations faites par Burton et Speke en Afrique orientale à celles de Heinrich Barth dans les régions du Sahara et du Tchad. Partis de Zanzibar, les trois aéronautes réalisent effectivement la traversée, au prix de mille aventures au terme desquelles ils parviennent au Sénégal avant de retourner en Angleterre où ils reçoivent un accueil enthousiaste. About the Author: Jules Verne se destine d'abord à une carrière de juriste, à l'image de son père, en suivant des études de droit. Sa passion pour la littérature est déjà très présente à cette époque. La science, les découvertes et avancées technologiques le captivent tout autant. Avec sa rencontre avec les Dumas (père et fils) au cours de l'année 1850, il commence à rédiger ses premiers poèmes. Mais c'est surtout sa rencontre avec l'éditeur Hetzel en 1863 qui marque un tournant majeur dans sa carrière publiant ses premiers ouvrages à succès. Les voyages et les croisières rythment sa vie et deviennent une grande source d'inspiration pour ses romans. Amoureux de la mer, Verne s'offrira trois navires et il n'aura de cesse d'emprunter la mer à la belle saison, faisant du cabotage entre la France, l'Angleterre, le Danemark et les Pays-Bas ou encre au large de l'Irlande. Il fait une grande croisière en Méditerranée au cours de l'année 1884, accompagné par son épouse avec qui il aura son premier et seul enfant nommé Michel. Mais ses plus grands voyages, ses plus folles explorations, Jules Verne les accomplira au-dessus des atlas, supports privilégiés de ses pérégrinations. Période littéraire: Il est reconnu pour ses romans d'aventures et principalement de science-fiction qu'on appelle aussi romans d'anticipation. C'est à travers ce genre littéraire qu'il se fait connaître. On le considère d'ailleurs comme le père français de la science-fiction . Il est apprécié pour ses oeuvres faisant preuve d'imagination et bien souvent accompagnées de connaissances scientifiques de l'époque. Il est l'auteur de langue française le plus traduit en langues étrangères à travers le monde.
