La pasión por el cine de terror puede quedar explicada también por ese deseo de aplaudir la otra cara de la moneda, al diablo en lugar de a Dios, al dictador que acaba de eliminar al presidente democrático, o al cazador que ha conseguido segar certeramente la vida de un pobre animal. Y es que para muchos espectadores los monstruos del cine que nos aterrorizan constituyen la oposición a los superhéroes, al "bueno" de las historias y a las benéficas hadas madrinas de los cuentos infantiles. Son los lobos de las novelas para adultos y el equivalente a tantos gigantes, dragones y fantasmas que nos aterrorizaron cuando éramos niños. También son, como diría Obi Wan Kenobi, el reverso tenebroso, el camino que lleva a esa extraña felicidad que ocasiona provocar daño en nuestros semejantes. Puede parecer extraño que el malvado de las historias y filmes no sea repudiado por lo espectadores, pero ahí tenemos el ejemplo de Drácula y Freddy Krueger, cada uno con docenas de clubes de fans diseminados por el mundo, del mismo modo que los tienen Godzilla, King Kong y el despiadado asesino de Scream. Darth Vader dicen que tuvo más admiradores que el guapo Luke Skywalker, aunque luego las admiradoras se inclinaron por el atractivo Harrison Ford, más asequible que el actor David Prowse que se escondía bajo la máscara negra que le permitía respirar. Parece ser que hacer vibrar a los corazones y las mentes humanas mediante el miedo es un pasaporte seguro para el éxito comercial y por ello en los últimos años el cine ha sido igualmente pródigo en películas con monstruos o asesino sin escrúpulos, y una nueva oleada de demonios nos ha llegado sin saber cómo ni porqué. La pasión del público por ver voluntariamente escenas de horror es un contrasentido, pues los villanos reales, los terroristas y los asesinos, no gozan del aplauso general, aunque no por ello dejan de tener adeptos fieles. También es significativo el hecho de que cuando existe un accidente de tráfico en la carretera, con muertos y sangre diseminados por el asfalto, se ocasione un atasco de varios kilómetros. La causa, ya lo sabemos, es la morbosidad por ver la muerte de cerca, el dolor de las víctimas del accidente. En resumidas cuentas, y volviendo al cine y los espectáculos, el secreto para el éxito es provocar miedo y repulsión (como ocurrió con "La naranja mecánica"), y la popularidad aumentará en la misma medida en que causen pánico a los usuarios. Pero los monstruos cambian con el paso de los años y si anteriormente tuvimos a Alien, o asesinos en serie como en el "Silencio de los corderos", ahora nos muestran a "Scream" o al mismísimo Diablo, cada vez más poderoso, aunque debe rivalizar por el trono de los malvados con las nuevas legiones de vampiros combatidos -menos mal- por "Blade". Este libro aporta un recorrido por las películas más populares del género de terror, aunque es posible que alguna destacable no figure en esta relación. También muy probablemente alguna de las incluidas no le hayan causado a usted, en particular, el menor miedo, pero no es misión de este manual juzgar un filme por los gritos de los espectadores, sino solamente por el género al que pertenece.
