Procedentes del espacio exterior, de esa última frontera apenas arañada por la exploración espacial, los alienígenas nos llevan visitando hace ya varios siglos, mucho antes de que se les mencionara animosamente como ETs, o más inquietantemente como Aliens. La Ufología, ciencia que estudia el fenómeno de los OVNIs, los nombra como Greys (grises), pues así es su aspecto según algunos dibujos efectuados por quienes aseguran haberles visto. Finalmente, en las leyendas antiguas utilizan el nombre de Jims, aunque bajo esta denominación se incluyen a brujas, animales mitológicos y fantasmas. El cine ha preferido seguir otra línea para hablarlos de los extraterrestres, y casi siempre los define como seres poseedores de una alta tecnología, así como de un aspecto que a nuestros ojos es horroroso, tanto como lo son sus propósitos destructores de la raza humana, una especie tan inferior para ellos que solamente sienten interés por aniquilarla. Pero si estos seres orgánicos son temibles y en ocasiones casi indestructibles, ¿qué podemos decir de los robots, unas máquinas casi siempre diseñadas para la guerra? Con un tamaño frecuentemente similar a la altura del ser humano, un cerebro mucho más eficaz que el mejor de nuestros ordenadores, y una envoltura en ocasiones casi orgánica pero más frecuentemente metalizada, su sola presencia hace inviable la respuesta bélica por nuestra parte. Si, además, juntamos a ambos elementos dentro de un gigantesco platillo volante, y les dotamos de un armamento sofisticado y eficaz, las consecuencias para nosotros, los sufridos humanos, serán tan desastrosas que mejor ni las imaginamos, así podremos dormir tranquilos. Con frecuencia han sido mostrados como seres hostiles por el cine, tan poderosos que ni los mejores ejércitos los pueden destruir, llegando hasta nuestras vidas para demostrarnos que nadie es dueño ni siquiera del terreno que pisa, pues todo depende de la fortaleza del invasor. Pilotando naves que viajan a velocidades superiores a la de la luz, y con una apariencia que casi siempre infunde tanto terror como su armamento, suelen estar acompañados por máquinas tan perfeccionadas que han aprendido a pensar por sí mismas, lo que deja muy poco margen para el error y la compasión. La unión entre ambos seres, los robots y los alienígenas, ha proporcionado al cine y a los escritores argumentos apasionantes y tenebrosos, aunque siempre ha sido el propio espectador, cuando retorna a su hogar, quien aporta con su imaginación nuevos datos para continuar sintiendo miedo. Afortunadamente, también hay extraterrestres amigables, como ese ET que nos señalaba con su dedo luminoso el lugar de su hogar, o el atractivo "Starman" que sin apenas saber hablar consiguió encandilar a las mujeres con sus cortas frases. Y sobre los robots también hay para todos los gustos y temblores, ya que nos han mostrado al invencible Gort de "Ultimátum a la Tierra" intentando hacer entrar en razones a los terrestres con sus rayos destructores, parejo al casi indestructible Terminator, quien luego, afortunadamente, se puso de nuestra parte. Algo más entrañables son esa reencarnación metálica de El Gordo y el Flaco denominados C3PO y R2D2, o ese mayordomo siempre sonriente llamado Andrew que encontró su propia vida en el "Hombre bicentenario", lo mismo que aquel vivaz, travieso y parlanchín robot que desquició a su propio dueño en "Cortocircuito".
