Albert Einstein desempeñó un papel fundamental en la concepción actual del Universo. Aunque es más conocido por las Teorías de la Relatividad especial y de la Relatividad General, las cuales desarrolló prácticamente por sí solo (aunque requirió la utilización de matemáticas avanzadas que habían sido ya desarrolladas por otros científicos de siglos anteriores), también se puede decir que fue el científico que "puso en marcha la Teoría Cuántica". Cuando explicó el "efecto fotoeléctrico" utilizando la constante de Planck "h", que éste había introducido cinco años antes, para ajustar las matemáticas a los resultados experimentales de los estudios de la "radiación de cuerpo negro", utilizó la fórmula para la energía luminosa: E=hν, (donde "ν" es la frecuencia de la "onda" de luz); el uso de esta fórmula implicaba que la luz tiene una naturaleza dual, manifestando propiedades tanto ondulatorias como corpusculares, puesto que la "frecuencia" es una característica típica de las "ondas", pero el hecho de que haya que multiplicarla por la constante "h" para obtener el valor de la energía correspondiente a cada frecuencia, "cuantiza" la energía, pues ésta solo tomará "valores discontinuos", múltiplos de "h"; esto conduce a considerar que la luz manifiesta también características de "partícula"; uno se inclina a pensar que solo la intuición y perspicacia geniales características de Einstein podían concebir algo semejante, tal como esas mismas cualidades le llevaron al descubrimiento de la Teoría de la Relatividad, que también causó asombro entre los científicos y la gente en general de su época (y parece que lo sigue haciendo en la actual).Curiosamente se considera generalmente a Einstein como un "opositor de la Teoría Cuántica", pero leyendo sus escritos se percibe que probablemente no era así, pues, por ejemplo, en uno de ellos manifiesta que "la mecánica cuántica ofrece mucho", pero su intuición le llevaba a pensar que no era una teoría definitiva, opinión que comparten hoy muchos científicos, como se ve por el hecho de que se sigue trabajando en su desarrollo y en su interpretación, y entre los cuales figuran algunos de muy respetada reputación y de elevada categoría, como Roger Penrose.Estas dos teorías, Relatividad y Teoría cuántica, poseen ambas confirmaciones experimentales de una precisión impresionante, y los muchos esfuerzos que se están haciendo para unificarlas, están conduciendo a una visión de la Realidad, sumamente interesante y sorprendente; es por lo tanto esencial que todos los interesados en obtener una comprensión profunda del mundo en que vivimos, conozcan cómo surgieron, y comprendan bien sus conceptos.Se ha preparado este libro con la intención de proporcionar tal comprensión.
