Corrijo un lapsus de mi memoria y me aferro al recuerdo de cuando era niña y bordaba mantillas como excusa para conminar al tiempo a deambular con mayor premura. Bordadas sin conocer más particularidad que su diseño y color. Todas blancas, sobre tul de novia. Con el mismo motivo calcado de todos los días. Todas iguales. Nunca me pregunté quién las usaría. No me importaba, no pensaba en ello. Tampoco jamás me probé una. ¿Para qué? ¿Por qué? No eran mías. Yo solo entramaba el hilo que halaba la rápida aguja en mis dedos, pasándolo por los minúsculos agujeros del delicado tul, una y otra vez, rítmicamente, siguiendo el trazo ya marcado.
Mientras bordaba, pensaba en mi familia, en la próxima visita del domingo, en mi madre, en mi padre, los que extrañaba tanto de lunes a sábado que mi tristeza competía con la inmaculada perfección de las pequeñas flores y con las aisladas y etéreas plumas del bordado, las que a mí me parecían finas alas de cisnes. Con cada puntada, con cada hilvanar de la aguja en la transparente tela, me interrogaba con eficiente melancolía: "¿Vendrán mis hermanas con mis padres? ¿Qué me traerá mi madre está vez? ¿Acaso otro dulce?"
Mi madre era una inigualable Repostera. Recuerdo que el nevado de sus pasteles siempre sabía a limón. Mi padre era Marinero, no olvido su uniforme, tan blanco como mis ajenos velos de iglesia. Mi madre amaba a mi padre más que a su vida misma. Él, no tenía más vida que la de su amada. Mientras bordaba, añoraba estar con mi madre, y esa nostalgia llegaba a mi boca cuando se convertía en agua salada que salía de mis ojos, haciendo borroso el cielo donde volaban bordados, los blancos cisnes cautivos en la mantilla que yacía sobre mis piernas. Mis lágrimas, producto de la lentitud con que transcurría el tiempo mientras bordaba, caían tan despacio que se secaban en su descenso, por lo que jamás mojaban las elegantes plumas de las alas de cisnes que yo pespunteaba en la tela.
Guardo en mi escasa memoria abundantes recuerdos de ese lugar que de niña creía era mi prisión y dónde me dediqué, además de bordar mantillas, a releer libros y libros y libros, incansablemente, hasta acabar las horas del largo día, apresurando el tiempo que allí pasaba más lento que en ninguna otra parte del mundo. Tan lejano mi recuerdo cómo la lejanía absoluta, inmensurable; recuerdos de este lugar, que era incapaz de ser menos de dos horas de distancia de donde yo vivía junto a mis padres y mis nueve hermanos.
El Hogar Clínica, un sitio de misión admirable; hospitalizar para su recuperación a niños con secuelas de enfermedades. Dónde pasaban meses y hasta más de un año internados, en espera de la cirugía que los haría caminar; unos, sin la silla de ruedas; otros, sin el irritante órtesis o aparato ortopédico, un artificio de laterales de hierro unidos con tornillos, que los mantenía de pie; y los más afortunados, caminar sin los feos, pero necesarios zapatos, también ortopédicos, que deslucían cualquier vestido, por hermoso que este fuera.
