« Il y a tantôt deux ans, on put lire dans les journaux, que Montmartre était tout d'un coup devenu l'un des points de mire de nos archéologues du Moyen Âge, et que la montagne des Ânes, ainsi qu'on l'appelait du temps de ses moulins, se trouvait momentanément un lieu chéri de la science.
On s'était enfin avisé de découvrir ce qu'on n'aurait jamais dû ignorer, ou du moins oublier, à savoir, que les trois chapelles romanes groupées derrière la vieille église Saint-Pierre, sous la tour de l'ancien télégraphe, sont un monument des plus curieux, des plus rares, surtout à Paris ! et, grand miracle ! au lieu de les détruire ou de les laisser se démolir d'elles-mêmes, ce qui n'eût pas tardé, on voulait bien les conserver; on les mettait par une acquisition intelligente, sous la sauvegarde de la ville et du comité des monuments historiques; bien mieux, on parlait de les restaurer !
Puisque l'archéologie s'installe à Montmartre, elle fera bien de ne pas se hâter d'en descendre. La célèbre butte renferme dans son sein plus d'une ruine perdue sous ses flancs de plâtre; il ne faut qu'y savoir chercher.
Les derniers vestiges de la chapelle du Martyre, la trace dernière du sanctuaire vénérable que saint Denis, l'apôtre de Lutèce, sanctifia par son supplice, et dans lequel -- détail trop ignoré des Parisiens -- Ignace de Loyola vint avec ses six compagnons, le 15 août 1534, consacrer par un voeu solennel la compagnie de Jésus "fille de Montmartre, des martyrs, et de la France"; ces précieux vestiges sont encore à retrouver. » (Édouard Fournier.)
