Lors de sa parution voici dix-huit ans, Chronique des derniers paiens fut salue a la fois par la critique universitaire la plus prestigieuse - Pierre Vidal-Naquet, Pierre Chaunu, Paul Veyne, Michel Tardieu -, et par un large public qui en fit un des livres les plus lus de sa categorie. L'auteur avait en effet fait le choix de raconter le triomphe du christianisme dans l'Empire romain en se placant du cote des vaincus, les paiens, sans complaisance a leur egard et sans denigrement des vainqueurs. La premiere partie, la Chronique proprement dite, deroule la fresque narrative des mesures successives de mise a l'ecart, puis de proscription des cultes polytheistes. La seconde partie, Portrait, fait revivre ces ultimes croyances et pratiques de l'Antiquite classique et souligne la proximite des mentalites, parfois tres grande, entre paiens et chretiens. Pour finir, des exemples saisissants d'integration de rituels, d'objets et de fetes polytheistes dans les fetes chretiennes montrent comment une part d'heritage s'est transmise. La solidite de l'information et l'agrement d'un style toujours clair et vivant font que ce livre n'a pas pris de rides. L'auteur a tenu neanmoins a faire suivre cette reedition d'une postface qui situe l'ouvrage dans le courant de la recherche contemporaine sur ces sujets restes brulants, a l'heure du renouveau et trop souvent du durcissement des positions religieuses des uns et des autres. Ce livre qui decrit la montee d'une intolerance portee parfois, de tous cotes, par les meilleurs esprits, est aussi un appel a la comprehension et a la tolerance, aujourd'hui, et un defi aux orthodoxies despotiques. Pierre Chuvin est professeur a l'Universite Paris Ouest Nanterre La Defense et a ete directeur de l'Institut francais d'etudes sur l'Asie centrale a Tachkent, puis de l'Institut francais d'etudes anatoliennes a Istanbul. Il a notamment publie La Mythologie grecque. Du premier homme a l'apotheose d'Heracles (1992) et a participe aux Belles Lettres a la traduction des Dionysiaques de Nonnos de Panopolis.
