About the Book

Chronically Hurtful People helps readers identify and deal with hurtful people-those who take no responsibility for their behavior. Readers learn about some of the common problems encountered in dealing with CHPs and learn ways to avoid these problems. The book offers an overall formula for intervention as well as specific intervention strategies.
_______________________________

"This book delivers. With and engaging and accessible style and drawing from a wealth of experience, the author tackles a most challenging arena such that readers will come away both informed and empowered." - Maribeth Kallemeyn, Ph.D.

"This book is a helpful handbook for working with difficult people in the world of work and in everyday life." - Kathy Larson, Educational Program Director and Retired Principal

"People who care about other people often sense something is off when dealing with chronically hurtful individuals. This book describes what makes responsible people so uneasy and gives them specific tools to help them work effectively with CHPs without becoming hurtful themselves or burning out. These interventions take practice and thoughtful attention but are clearly worth the effort. This book should be required reading not only for helping professionals, but also reporters, judges, police, politicos, bosses, employees, teachers, receptionists, and voters too." - Jan Vlahos, MPA Training Manager, Retired, Multnomah County Health Department

"Chronically Hurtful People ... should be on the reading list of anyone who is working with or connected to this challenging clientele." - Dennis H. Martin, Ph.D.

"After spending over forty years working with children and families affected by the people Ms. Livingston describes in this book, I only regret that she is just now sharing her thoughts. This would have made a huge difference for me in my work and for the families I served. This is a 'must read' for helpers working in child welfare and juvenile corrections." - Larry Lissman, Director, Strength Based Consulting

"Working in the public health world, serving clients and managing staff, we need an extensive tool kit to be successful. We need to understand what motivates individuals to be their best and what to do when relationships and behaviors are not working. I am so excited that Roxanne has written her wisdom down so that a larger community can share the wealth." - Sharon N. Black, Principal, Sharon N. Black Consultants, LLC

"With this book, Roxanne Livingston has created what I think will be a most useful product for the understanding and management of a wide range of clinical presentations dealing with disordered thinking, feelings, and behavior. This book is well written and offers a good basic presentation of timely issues as well as vintage thinking of the past. Discussion guides are self-evident and inclusive insuring a continuation of interest in the clinical topic and the end point of clinical understanding. At this point, the therapist may more realistically expect to positively impact the Chronically Hurtful People so prevalent in our society." - Jack M. Rogers, M.D., Associate Emeritus Professor in Psychiatry, Winston-Salem, North Carolina

About the Author: Roxanne K. Livingston, M.A., is a Licensed Professional Counselor practicing individual, couple and family therapy for over thirty years.
