About the Book

Christmas is the most popular season of the year, full of expectancy and promise, a sense of giving and receiving. We know it involves more than going to the mall, but it's still too easy to remain deaf to the frequent complaints about materialism or consumerism so often tied to this time of year. Christmas Grace: Crazy Gifts aims to explore that deeper meaning of the season through a series of reflections on the popular folk carol "The Twelve Days of Christmas." A great reference for those of us open to and eager for spirituality but, possibly less so, "religion." The spirituality here is playful and serious, imaginative and historic. While reminding us that Christmas is indeed about Christ (and not just shopping), it's also about love... and so much more. Christmas Grace: Crazy Gifts triggers our imaginations in attempting to make sense of the popular folk song, drawing connections to mainstream and independent non-secular thought with a special emphasis on the generosity of God's own gifts to us. A great daily devotional for those looking to observe each of the twelve days of Christmas.
About the Author: Raised in Venezuela, William Green was educated at George School (Society of Friends), Oberlin College and Yale Divinity School. He is an ordained minister of the United Church of Christ and a pastor who has also held regional and national church positions in the U.S. His work has included inter-faith and interdenominational work, community organization, political candidacy, along with fundraising. He speaks Spanish, brings cross-cultural sensitivity to his work, and initiated a multi-faith group in Shaker Heights, Ohio, that engages important differences of belief. In 2005, he was one of the founders of the United Church of Christ's "God is Still Speaking" Writers Group on which he served until recently. Among many other publications, the "Stillspeaking" writers produce online daily devotions available to subscribers at no cost and now reaching over 20,000 readers. In 2010, after writing "52 Ways to Ignite Your Congregation: Generous Giving" and while continuing with other devotional writing, he decided to focus his experience on church and nonprofit revitalization. His concern is missional clarity, morale, and financial development. This inspired the founding of the Long Looking consultancy. Incorporated in Long Looking work is a two-fold emphasis on (1) the definition and engagement of vision in planning for short (3-5 yrs.) and long-term (5+ years) growth; and, with religious bodies, (2) how strategies of faith thrive in the pluralistic and secular environment found as much within as outside the church. Along with congregational stewardship development in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Michigan, he has worked on political and civic campaigns in Connecticut, and financial planning and fundraising in California, Minnesota, Pennsylvania and New York. A member of Plymouth Church, United Church of Christ, Shaker Heights, Ohio, he now serves on the capital campaign committee of the church, helping to raise $850,000 for accessibility and property projects.
