Bush sein Amt als 43. Präsident der Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika an. Unter den 15 Ministern und Ministerinnen seines Kabinetts gab es nur eine Frau, die während Bushs gesamter Präsidentschaft im Amt blieb: Arbeitsministerin Elaine Lan Chao. "Elaine Chao believes deeply in the American dream because she has lived it", sagte Bush damals über seine Arbeitsministerin.1 Denn Chao war die erste Amerikanerin chinesischer Abstammung, die ein Amt im Kabinett eines US-Präsidenten innehatte. Geboren in Taipeh, emigrierte sie im Alter von acht Jahren mit ihrer Familie nach Amerika.2 Vierzig Jahre später wurde sie Ministerin in Bushs Kabinett. Eine Tatsache, die in der heutigen Zeit niemanden verwundern dürfte. Schließlich gehört ein Großteil der chinesischstämmigen Amerikaner der Mittelschicht an. Bei vielen Chinesen, die in den USA leben, handelt es sich sogar um qualifizierte Fachkräfte, die für international tätige Unternehmen arbeiten. Oder um chinesische Studenten, die nach ihrer Ausbildung in den USA bleiben.3 Kaum vorstellbar, dass es durchaus eine Zeit gab, in der chinesische Einwanderer in den USA unwillkommen waren und dass Immigranten aus dem Land der Mitte in Amerika mit Diskriminierung, Rassismus und offene Gewalt durch Weiße konfrontiert wurden. Die US-Regierung erließ 1882 sogar ein Gesetz, das Chinesen zur einzigen unerwünschte Nation erklärte und ihnen über 60 Jahre lang die Einreise in die USA verwehrte.4 In dieser Zeit starker antichinesischer Bewegungen spielt Yan Gelings Roman Fusang (The Lost Daughter of Happiness).
