a.k.a. The Children of the Cavern; The Black Indies; Strange Doings Underground; Black Diamonds; The Underground City
Over a decade, the fortunes of the mining community of Aberfoyle near Stirling, Scotland, begin to grow. Receiving a letter from an old colleague, mining engineer James Starr sets off for the old Aberfoyle mine, thought to have been mined out years earlier. He finds mine overman Simon Ford and his family living in a cottage deep inside the mine; Ford has discovered a new, large vein of coal.
From the outset, mysterious happenings occur, attributed goblins and firemaidens. Soon after the discovery of the new vein, the community is revitalised. A town grows around the underground lake called Loch Malcolm.
Suspicious of a malevolent force at work, Harry explores the cavern system. Down a deep shaft, he finds a young orphan girl named Nell, who is adopted by Simon and Madge but reveals nothing of where she came from; only that she has never left the mine.
When Simon's son Harry and Nell announce their marriage, mysterious occurrences come to a head.
