About the Book

Read a little bit from this book and judge for yourself.

Falling asleep: Children take some time to wind down at the end of an active day. Hence we need to make allowances for the same by giving them a pressure-free, relaxing and comfortable sleep environment. Providing them with their favourite toy to hold or a nice picture or story book to read is welcome. So is reading them a story or singing them a lullaby. Adults often continue their own evening activities like watching T.V. and talking and laughing in the same room as the child who is trying to fall asleep. Such activities should be curtailed, or if feasible, taken to another room. Rather, the child should be made to sleep in another room if possible. Distractions like flickering neon lights, noises and smells from the road outside, sounds of neighbours and others may all add to the agony of falling asleep. On the other hand, some children start ???demanding??? certain rituals everyday! These demands may be easy to satisfy initially, such as ???give me some milk??? or ???read me a story??? or ???tell me a story???, but as time goes on, they may become a nuisance for the parents who themselves need time to unwind at the end of a hectic day. Thus some children find it increasingly difficult to fall asleep.

What to do? It is very tempting to smack the baby and let her cry to sleep, or to give her a ???sleeping medicine???. However, this is incorrect. Try and find out why your child is finding it difficult to fall asleep. Remember that a hungry stomach, a bored mind and uncomfortable surroundings are the three main causes of this problem. Try not to ???excite??? the child by telling horror stories or reading from very scary or adventure-filled picture books. Do not offer bribes or rewards for falling asleep. Nor should you castigate her or beat her for not doing so. Understand that the child needs the love of both her parents and if the father customarily arrives late, the child will keep making excuses to stay awake till he does, so that she can get to be close to him. If possible, do something about it; if not, take it in your stride and learn to cope with it. It is likely that sooner or later, the child will also learn to cope with it and stop making such a big issue out of it. She may either learn to sleep without seeing her father, or sleep late everyday, regardless of what you do to make her sleep early.
