About the Book

In the beginning there was God ... so reads Genesis chapter one.In the beginning there was a singularity. So states the theory of cosmology, the study of the origin of the universe. This singularity was infinitely small in size, made up of the most elemental of atomic particles. These particles were in constant motion and their location could not be identified. In a sense they were nowhere and yet everywhere.About fourteen billion years ago a gravity-defying force appeared and the singularity exploded in what is known as the Big Bang. The universe expanded to about the size of a grapefruit then split into several identical universes. Just as human twins grow up genetically identical, yet different as they mature, so did these universes. For our story we simply consider two: our universe and the universe of a young man named Mattpaul.Mattpaul's world evolved simultaneously as the world of Earth evolved. In some ways we on Earth are more advanced. In other ways Mattpaul's world is. One thing is clear. Mattpaul's world of Caperston has been the more orderly world until recently when new emerging ideas began to challenge age-old traditions.Change began with the emergence of a prophet by the name of Chi-hay-su. Chihaysu's message is strikingly similar to the message of Jesus Christ on earth some two thousand years earlier. He uses several of the same parables except they are put in the context of the way of life in Caperston. So the Good Samaritan does not rescue the injured man on the side of the road but pulls an almost drowned man out of the sea, dumping a days worth of fish caught, to make room for him in his small boat.Chihaysu's message is challenging as he is speaking to a population that has never had a concept of a supreme being, a caring creator, a God. All they know is a Ruler, designated by birth. This is a world in which everyone believes that what the Ruler declares is always the truth. That is until Chihaysu appears. The Ruler supports a system of privileged Valley People and poor, taken advantaged of Mountain People. This is the inequality that brings Chihaysu forward. As Mattpaul and other youth listen to Chihaysu they become sensitized to their world's inequalities. They also are exposed to a very foreign concept ... prayer. They relish the insight prayer provides but those associated with the Ruler find this behavior threatening. Mattpaul's father is second in command in Caperston under the Ruler and has planned for a prestigious job for Mattpaul after he graduates from school in a few months. But Mattpaul has decided to give up this opportunity to follow the "radical" Chihaysu. As changes are coming to Caperston, youth on earth are facing a crisis of their own. One earth youth, Alex, who has been corresponding regularly with Mattpaul, shares his despair over the death of his best friend, who was killed while helping homeless people in New York City at a soup kitchen. He also feels very guilty as he could easily have been killed in place of his friend. Alex calls out, "Why does God allow bad things to happen to good people?" and Mattpaul attempts to give support as they correspond. As the challenges in both worlds intensify, two climaxes are reached, one on Caperston and the other on earth. Then the story of a mysterious chest, filled with visions which propel Chihaysu's ministry forward, is shared. Its contents reveal some answers but then...So let us let the youth, Mattpaul and Alex, tell their stories as we begin our journey to Caperston..
