Peu d'animaux peuvent prétendre à une telle attention, nombreux artistes- peintres ont puisé aussi leurs inspirations dans ce félin: Manet- Léonor Fini- Suzanne Valadon- Dali et son chat sauvage, un ocelot- Fougita avec Miké- Picasso- et déjà Léonard de Vinci dessinait des chats. Il Sucitera un intérêt toujours plus grand et sera après le chien l'animal de compagnie le plus près de l'homme, il est un compagnon peu exigeant et apaisant sans être envahissant, mais de par son instinct sauvage, il peut vivre seul.À partir de 1910, sera fondée en Grande-Bretagne la première organisation féline appelée Governing Council of Cat Fancy, c'est elle qui écrira le standard officiel de chaque race et du pedigree des chats. La classification des races de chats reste très compliquée tant la diversité de ce félin est grande, une même race de chats peut porter des noms différents selon la législation du pays d'origine.
