Elle l'avait rejoint, son éducation finie, à dix-sept ans, et ce furent d'heureux mois qu'ils passèrent ensemble dans leur petit village. Le docteur Arvoine retrouvait sa fille droite et sincère, et simple comme un garçon, telle qu'il la voulait, telle qu'il l'avait façonnée dès sa petite enfance. On ne la lui avait pas trop gâtée au pensionnat. Il concédait même que ses manières avaient gagné et qu'elle chantait fort agréablement. Elle lisait l'allemand et l'anglais; elle pouvait traduire à son père, en s'aidant de dictionnaires spéciaux, certains articles de revues scientifiques étrangères auxquelles il s'abonna tout exprès. Cela vaudra toujours mieux pour toi que des romans Tauch-nitz. Elle plaida pour obtenir quelques romans, mais elle lut cependant les redoutables revues, d'abord parce que cela plaisait à son père, ensuite parce qu'elle entretenait ainsi une communauté de vues et d'intérêts avec Siméon Taubert, son toujours fidèle ami, son frère d'adoption.
