Nach den religiösen, politischen und sozialen Kämpfen des Reformationszeitalters war, wie das stets nach großen Volks- und Massenbewegungen zu geschehen pflegt, eine Art Stillstand und Rückschlag für die Fortentwicklung eingetreten. Die durch die Reformationsbewegungen zur Geltung gekommenen Stände und Interessen suchten sich zu konsolidiren und die daraus hervorgehenden Reibungen führten wieder zu gewaltsamen Kämpfen und Erschütterungen von mehr oder weniger langer Dauer, die alle übrigen Interessen absorbirten, den materiellen wie den geistigen Fortschritt der Massen für lange Zeit hemmten. In Deutschland hatte die Reformation dem Landesfürstenthum Oberwasser verschafft. Die Landesfürsten hatten die Reformation benutzt, um unter dem Deckmantel der Religion die eigene Hausmacht nach Möglichkeit zu stärken dadurch, daß sie den kleinen Adel sich unterthänig und von sich abhängig machten, die Macht der Geistlichkeit brachen, sich selbst die bischöfliche Gewalt beilegten, Kloster und Kirchengut konfiszirten und die gewonnene Macht benutzten, sich immer mehr von der Kaisergewalt zu emanzipiren, diese zum bloßen Schatten zu degradiren. Aus diesem Interessenkampf der Fürsten entstanden die sogenannten Religionskriege, der schmalkaldische und der dreißigjährige Krieg, die Deutschlands politische Ohnmacht und Zerrissenheit auf Jahrhunderte besiegelten, seine ökonomische Schwächung die schon durch die Umgestaltung der Weltmarktsbeziehungen in Folge der Entdeckung von Amerika und des Seewegs nach Ostindien veranlaßt war noch vergrößerten und allgemeine Armuth, schweren geistigen und geistlichen Druck über Länder und Völker verbreiteten."
