[...] Er kniff sich, er schnitt Grimassen vor dem Spiegel, und glaubte die bewunderungswürdigsten Wirkungen von seiner Herrschaft über die Geister zu erfahren. Er freuete sich seines Systems, und beschloß, es durch Abbildungen dieser grimassierenden Verhältnisse festzusetzen und auf die Nachwelt zu bringen." Mit diesen Worten beschreibt Friedrich Nicolai, ein deutscher Schriftsteller der Aufklärung, den Bildhauer Franz Xaver Messerschmidt und dessen Arbeitsmethode, dem er im Jahr 1785 einen Besuch abstattete. Nicht nur der Prozess, der zur Herstellung der sogenannten "Charakterköpfe" führte, wird darin beleuchtet, sondern es kommt auch zum Ausdruck, dass es sich bei den Büsten um ein "System" handele. Die Arbeit an den "Charakterköpfen" wurde Messerschmidt ab 1770 zur vordergründigen Aufgabe seines künstlerischen Schaffens und sollte ihn bis zu seinem Tod im Jahr 1783 beschäftigen. Von den 69 entstandenen Büsten sind 53 erhalten, die allesamt den menschlichen Gesichtsausdruck von "Natur gemäßen Köpfen" bis zu grotesken Verzerrungen (vgl. Abb. 1 und 2) präsentieren. Die Köpfe werden zum "Träger wechselnder mimischer Konstellationen", die sich trotz verschiedener Kopftypen auf das Bildnis des Künstlers zurückführen lassen. Als eine "Reihe gleichartiger, zueinander passender Dinge", wird der Seriencharakter der Köpfe deutlich. Die Serie wird jedoch erst Ende des 19. Jhd. mit den "Getreideschobern" und den "Kathedralen" Monets zu einem festgelegten Werkbegriff mit Gesetzmäßigkeiten (siehe 4.1.). Inwiefern man bei den grimassierenden Köpfen trotzdem von einer Serie sprechen kann, wird im Folgenden erörtert werden. Anhand ausgewählter Beispiele soll gezeigt werden, was man unter serieller Kunst versteht,
