About the Book

Come for a roller-coaster ride in Changing Times: Ramblings of an Old Fart. Marsha Gordon's essays take readers from a birth at the bare end of the Depression to the built-in obsolescence of today. They examine new families and old farts. American institutions and institutionalized Americans. Patriotism and parenthood. There's a Russian tale, and a night in jail. You'll find memoirs of a fascinating life. Travelogue and social commentary. The joys of childhood and the tribulations of aging. Opinions you'll agree with, and some you won't. You might find a lump in your throat, or a song in your heart. Gordon has lived this ride through all of its ups and downs. Though an orphan, she was "one lucky kid." She endured a disastrous marriage, yet emerged "happy and carefree." She buried one child, and very nearly a second. She has survived the computer age, a brush with the Mafia, and enough encounters with the medical establishment to use a whole roll of ride tickets. These are intensely personal stories painted with a wide stroke, drawing readers in with humor and poignancy. Gordon argues that it's how we react to life's changes, with humor or despair, that takes our measure. These essays reflect her quest to find laughter in the face of transformations that affect us all. It's a joy to read her ruminations on growing up, growing old, and the inevitable march of time. She is a survivor, and she just might alter your attitude toward the changes in your own life. Tighten your seat belt and hop on for a delightful ride. There's something here for everyone. Gordon's reminiscences about "The Good Old Days" appeal to seniors, but this is much more than a collection of nostalgic meanderings. Her insight, humor, and zingy endings capture readers of all ages. In an era of short attention spans, Gordon knows the value of brevity. These quick reads are good for the coffee table, the bedside, the bathroom, or the doctor's waiting room. Be a part of these changing times - come rambling with an old fart!
About the Author: Marsha Gordon has played many roles. Orphan and spoiled brat. Wife, mother, grandmother, greatgrandma. Actress and media personality. World traveler and international tour director. Businesswoman and writer. And self-described old fart. Her writing credits include a four-year run of a weekly newspaper column called Singlephile, for the newly single. She was selected from more than a thousand applicants to write the Miami edition of Changing Homes, a quarterly national magazine. Hundreds of Gordon's articles, book and theater reviews have been published from New England to California. Gordon acted with the American Theater Wing on Public Radio's WNYC in New York City. She went on to host and produce a number of radio and television shows, notably Pulse!, a daily, hour-long, live call-in TV show featuring nationally acclaimed actors, musicians, writers and politicians. Nominated for a Peabody award, Pulse! aired in South Florida and on radio stations throughout the Caribbean. For her work on Pulse!, Gordon received an award from Tele-Communications cable station. Named Outstanding Woman of the Year by the Zonta organization, she was also recognized by United Way for her outstanding achievements toward their goal. She ran for Mayor of Key West and was given the Key to the City, even though she lost the election. Numerous additional awards paper her office walls. Gordon is an enthusiastic and engaging speaker who enjoys traveling and meeting new people. She tells of her adventures from New England to New Orleans, from Alaska to Antarctica, from Russia to Machu Picchu, through the Panama Canal and around Cape Horn. With an eye for the unusual, Gordon once landed on a U.S. aircraft carrier and spent the day aboard, finally lifting off into a blazing sunset in the company of military pilots. From her armchair, Gordon's reminiscences turn disaster into comedy. She raises everyday concerns to a higher level, taking readers along for a laugh - and a tear or two. She is a wise old fart, with curiosity and humor that delight readers. Dive into her world and enjoy!
