About the Book

Three years before NYC's 1969 Stonewall Riots, the 'gay liberation' movement catapulted in Kansas City when 40 representatives from nearly 15 organizations met on February 19-21, 1966, at Kansas City's Hotel State-formerly located at the northeast corner of 12th and Wyandotte. It was the first-ever national gathering of lesbian and gay rights activists.Missourian Harold Leland "Hal" Call spearheaded the event attended by Kansas Citians Drew Shafer, Al Greathouse, and Larry Hungerford. Other national equality visionaries Barbara Gittings, Forest Gunnison Jr, Frank Kameny, Phyllis Lyon, Del Martin, and Don Slater joined; they soon formed the 'North American Conference of Homophile Organizations' (NPCHO).This expanded, second edition, marks the 50th anniversary of Kansas City's pivotal role in the early struggle for equal rights for LGBTQIA individuals, and coincides with the October 2016 unveiling of Kansas City's first historical, interpretive LGBTQIA-related marker. In addition to a timeline almanac and digest of feature articles, this volume contains the first-ever, comprehensive census of 175 Kansas City lesbian and gay bars from the 1930s to present.
About the Author: David W. Jackson is founder, director, archivist of The Orderly Pack Rat, a historical research, consulting and local history publishing house he founded in 1996. His childhood hobby of genealogy initiated at age 11 foreshadowed his future career. He was graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Historic Preservation-Archives Studies from Southeast Missouri State University in 1993. He served as an archivist at Unity Archives for Unity School of Christianity and as Director of Archives and Education for the Jackson County (Mo.) Historical Society for 20 years before retiring in 2014. In addition to contributing numerous feature articles to newspapers and periodicals, Jackson has also served as editor for several serials. His earliest editorship was in the mid-1990s for an LGBTQIA-related organizational newsletter titled, Free to Be, for an affinity group by the same title at the Unity Church of Overland Park, Kansas. In the late 1990s, Jackson became editor of an online e-zine, Authenticity.org, for the National Institute for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Education. Jackson has also authored, co-authored, and/or edited numerous local history-related books and other products, as highlighted at orderlypackrat.com. Jackson co-founded the Gay and Lesbian Archive of Mid-America (GLAMA) on World AIDS Day in 2009, and his first edition of Changing Times: Almanac and Digest of Kansas City's Gay and Lesbian History was released in 2011.
