Informations-gesellschaft werden Forderungen nach Reformen im Bildungswesen laut (Steinbicker, 2011). Der "kommunikationstechnologische rasende soziale Wandel braucht ständig Personen, die mit neuen technischen Gegebenheiten kompetent umgehen können." (Rein, 1996, S.119). Das Stichwort "lebenslanges Lernen" erfordert zudem nicht selten die Vereinbarung von Lernprozessen mit dem Familienleben und bedarf einer flexiblen Gestaltung von Lernzeiten und Betreuung der Lernenden. Eine Verschiebung der Lernprozesse bzw. -betreuung in den virtuellen Raum bietet sich in diesem Zusammenhang an. Schon heute ist ein wachsender Anteil virtueller Seminare unter den Lernformen zu verzeichnen. Dies stellt nicht nur neue Anforderungen an die Lernenden sondern erweitert auch den Fähigkeiten- bzw. Fertigkeitenbedarf von Lehrenden um den Aspekt der Betreuung von Online- Kommunikationsprozessen. Die bildungswissenschaft-liche Bedeutsamkeit von Online-Tutoren1 soll in den Fokus der vorliegenden Hausarbeit treten. Es wird der Frage nachgegangen, inwieweit Online-Tutoring einen Beitrag zur Bildung von Medienkompetenz für Lehrende leisten kann. Während sich das zweite Kapitel mit der begrifflichen Klärung sowie der Entwicklung und Bedeutsamkeit der Medienkompetenz als Schlüsselqualifikation für Lehrer befasst, widmet sich das dritte Kapitel nach einer begrifflichen Klärung mit der Relevanz von Online-Tutoring für lernende Gemeinschaften im virtuellen Raum sowie den Aufgaben und Kompetenzen von Online-Tutoren und konkludiert mit einem praktischen Beispiel.
