El mío es un viaje por un paisaje y un entorno bucólicos, que me han marcado a lo largo de mi vida. Es la experiencia y la fortuna de quienes, como yo, se encontraron viviendo el período de transición de la vida en el campo, hecha con el trabajo y el sudor de las manos, a la mecanización y la modernización. Lo que hace fascinante este viaje de regreso a mi biografía es la sucesión de afectos, seres queridos y figuras especiales por su carácter y su actitud. La novela es, por así decirlo, una historia dentro de otra historia. Los personajes: Filomena, la abuela de carácter decidido, el volcán siempre a punto de estallar, mi padre, la tía Paola, la tía Lina, el tío Ferdinando, el tío Armando, el barbero-acordeonista, el guardabosques, el panadero, la peinadora, el viñador (que al principio se presenta como analfabeto, pero...), el único guardia de tráfico, el granjero Luigi, que me enseña a montar a caballo, y su mujer Carmela, excelente cocinera, y Cerasella, la burra de mi abuela. Con El Cerro de Los Zorros ofrezco al lector la posibilidad de abrir el cofre del tesoro de la memoria de la vida, y de revivirla. Los recuerdos de la infancia quedan imborrables en la memoria de cada uno de nosotros: y eso vale para todos. En este relato autobiográfico, a través de una exposición tan sencilla y lineal como siempre desde el punto de vista expresivo, cuento mis experiencias reales de niño de apenas siete años que, solo y a bordo de autobús (tres, para apenas cien kilómetros), en el caluroso verano de 1955 se dirigió de Corato a Rocchetta San Antonio, un pueblo de los Apeninos Dauno Irpino, donde vivía Filomena, mi enérgica e infatigable abuela materna. Pequeña, y todavía dedicada, a su ya no tan joven edad, al trabajo diario en su viña, en la comarca de El Cerro de Los Zorros (de ahí el título de la novela), rodeada de campos de trigo, ya maduro, maíz y girasoles, y aquí paso todo el verano. En el segundo autobús, encuentro una docena de mujeres, con grandes pañuelos en la cabeza, medias dobles de lana y botas con clavos; todas alegres, despreocupadas, felices de ir a ganarse el pan cosechando el grano, y entre ellas Rosetta: una chica a la que ya conocía. Cuando llegué al pueblo, además de mi abuela Filomena (viuda desde hacía cinco años), que más tarde me revelaría los muchos pequeños secretos del mundo agrícola, encontré a mis tías Paola (maestra de escuela) y Lina (ama de casa), sometidas a las estrictas normas de su madre, porque era una mujer de carácter firme y autoritario, a mis tíos Armando, de modales bruscos y severos, y Fernando, un joven universitario; así como el mi amigo Giovannino, siempre sonriente y listo para una broma, que me presentaría rincones escondidos del pueblo. Fiel custodio de estos recuerdos, que están en mi mente como una mina, y yo soy el minero de ellos, los ofrezco al lector con delicadeza, y con el candor de la mirada de un niño. Además, a menudo recurro a digresiones, cuando me entretengo en denunciar los numerosos problemas que marcaron, y siguen marcando, la vida cotidiana de los habitantes de este pequeño pueblo del sur Italia (principalmente agricultores, campesinos y artesanos) en los años anteriores (los bandidos) y en el presente, (la educación, los impuestos, los holgazanes crónicos que más tarde se convirtieron en sindicalistas y políticos de bajo nivel, la emigración masiva a las ciudades del Norte o a Alemania). Otra característica del relato es la gran importancia que concedo a las palabras, porque a menudo son ellas, las expresiones dialectales, primer signo distintivo de una comunidad, las que le dan ritmo y presentan a los distintos personajes.
