About the Book

A Century of Progress was written by Imogene DeBusk and originally published in 1972. This Illustrated version -Does not include original photos -Does not include original advertisements -Includes a 1972 photo of Imogene DeBusk -Includes a photo of the original cover -Includes photos of original Centennial souvenirs -Includes a copy of the original 4-page Historical Pageant program In 1972, New Market, Indiana, turned 100 years old. The celebration was huge. New Market celebrated with a parade, a festival, and a historical pageant. New Market made centennial souvenirs - pitchers, trivets, key chains, wooden nickels, and a Centennial History Book. Imogene DeBusk, a teacher at New Market Elementary, wrote A Century of Progress, the definitive history of the town of New Market. Mrs. DeBusk thoroughly researched the beginning of New Market and the pioneers who helped build it. She interviewed several people for the book. In the beginning of the book she writes, To The Reader - A CENTURY OF PROGRESS is the history of the town of New Market, Indiana from 1872 to 1972. It is a compilation of stories and facts derived from many resources. To everyone who contributed in any way to this Centennial Book I wish to express my sincere thanks. Imogene DeBusk worked many long hours writing this book. I know because Imogene is my grandmother and I remember watching her work in her temporary office downtown. She typed the book by hand on her old typewriter. Suburban Press in Crawfordsville printed books for the Centennial celebration. At one time there were boxes and boxes of those tan-covered books but now it's difficult to find a copy. That's why I'm re-publishing this book, in order to preserve New Market's rich history. Unfortunately I don't have the photos my grandma compiled, so none of the photos from the original book are included. I know my grandma would be happy this history book is still available. May you enjoy reading all about New Market's early years!
About the Author: Imogene DeBusk lived in New Market, Indiana, her whole life. She and her husband, Charles DeBusk, were teachers at New Market Elementary School for 35 years.
