A causa di un terremoto vengono scoperti due scheletri di donna abbracciati, parzialmente inceneriti. Stefano, un capitano dei carabinieri in Cina con la sola facoltà di assistere in quanto stagista, si accorge di qualcosa di insolito: ambedue gli scheletri hanno l'avambraccio sinistro molto sviluppato.
Lian Feng, un'ispettrice di polizia, viene condotta in centrale perché accusata di aver rapinato una banca. Guardando il filmato della telecamera, Lian Feng resta sbalordita nel vedere la somiglianza della rapinatrice, di nome Pu, con lei. Quando Pu viene arrestata, Lian Feng le rivela di essere stata adottata, e di ricordare di una bambina molto somigliante a lei incontrata una volta per caso. Ma Pu sembra non conoscerla. Una volta scarcerata, Liang Feng inizia a pedinarla scoprendo che hanno qualcosa in comune: ascoltano musica rock, sono mancine, giocano a tennis, hanno tatuato l'impronta della zampa di un gatto perché amanti dei gatti, e possiedono un gatto che hanno chiamano con i loro rispettivi nomi.
Ed ambedue hanno la stessa patologia: un tumore al seno.

Le loro strade s'intrecceranno con quella di Stefano in continui salti temporali che enfatizzeranno la drammaticità delle loro vite spezzate.

Questa sceneggiatura è sicuramente una delle migliori.
È anche la prima sceneggiatura originale ad essere stata scritta in Cina, e pensata per un cast misto di attori cinesi e stranieri. Ed anche la prima che presenta innumerevoli avvicendamenti nei dialoghi, attraverso i quali parte della drammaticità della storia viene narrata.

Il 2009 è stato il mio primo anno in Cina. Mi trovavo a Kunming, nello Yunnan. Lavoravo per un'azienda di produzione cinematografiche e televisive. Mi chiesero se volessi scrivere una sceneggiatura che risaltasse le differenze culturali tra oriente ed occidente, una sceneggiatura da presentare ad un concorso per finanziamenti pubblici. Accettai la sfida.

Le mie storie nascono sempre da diversi appunti sparsi, a volte autoconclusivi, a volte appena un incipit.
Uno degli appunti, per esempio, è quello di due ragazze adulte che si incontrano casualmente all'aeroporto, e scoprono di essere sorelle adottate da due diverse famiglie. Fu una notizia data ai telegiornali. Mi piacque, e pensai che potesse essere adatta per Ceneri.
Il personaggio di Stefano è ispirato ad una parte della mia vita: volevo diventare un carabiniere ma, ahimè, ci si mise in mezzo mio padre che all'ultimo concorso, prima dello scadere del ventottesimo anno di età, di proposito mi comunicò una data posteriore a quella effettiva.

A trama approvata, cominciai a scrivere la sceneggiatura prendendomi un mese e mezzo di tempo.
Tutte le mattine, prima di iniziare, ascoltavo un po' di musica rock. Una canzone in particolare mi dava molta ispirazione, Hold the line dei Toto.

È sicuramente anche imbastardita da una buona dose delle mie esperienze personali con in cinesi dello Yunnan, in alcuni casi enfatizzate, in altri riadattate, in quella parte di Cina, Kunming, una città molto diversa se consideriamo delle entità più popolose come Shenzhen, Beijing o Shanghai.

Poi, come molti altri progetti in Cina, tutto si eclissò.
E con esso anche la realizzazione del film.
