Captain Aaron Baker is on the planet Radoon in order to find two crewmen for his spaceship the Celestial Rex, a space freighter.
He finds them and as they are heading for their spaceship an invasion of Radoon occurs and they have to run for their lives. In the process they fall in with The Tigean Ambassador to Radoon (who is critically wounded), his Lady and a young girl, Princess Ellaina. They are guarded by Captain Fashleel and a squad of Tigean guards.
They fight their way to the Celstial Rex and make their escape. They learn that there is also an invasion of Tigea and they cannot go there until it is over.
They travel around in space for months.
Subsequently, Ellaina falls in love with the stoic stand-offish Captain Baker who is hiding a secret of his past. But Captain Baker does not reciprocate.
Meanwhile, it is known that something is wrong with the Ambassador's Lady and she goes wild and attacks Baker in his cabin. By the time she is subdued Baker is deathly ill. They must get to Tigea within fourteen days or he will die. The ship has to be altered technically so they can make it and Ellaina is of assistance in this endeavor.
Just before they arrive the Ambassador dies and Baker is treated but confined to his cabin in a coma.
Tigea is struggling with an invasion threat and internally a civil war.
The Lady, it turns out, is Queen Arania of Tigea. And her Tigean DNA calls for her to mate with one man and after that he can mate with no other or he will die.
Baker is not happy to learn this but he adjusts to his new weird life. He soon resents Arania, beautiful as she is, as being the only woman possible in his life.
About now it is revealed that at one time Baker was imprisoned for piracy which turned out to be a rigged charge.
Later on the woman who he survived imprisonment with, the gorgeous Tillwa and her child fifteen-year old Baby, come to Tigea and they reunite. Now a troubled love triangle becomes a love quadrangle.
Baker and his crew deal with the civil and political unrest on Tigea.
Meanwhile, Baker becomes a reluctant father of twins. He has no interest in the children or their mother and seems to have a renewed interest in Tillwa.
The denouement involve space adventures, battles and the restoring to the throne of Queen Arania. Amidst all of this, Baker (whose real name is Robert Vogel) falls in love with Arania. A political uprising takes place. There is the overthrow of a dictator hopeful, Duke Raasheed, and the death of Baby who turned out to be Baker's real daughter. Though the political problems of Tigea are solved, Baker is deeply crushed by the death of his daughter, Baby. He now understands the responsibility and the deep love that come with parenthood, and the reclusive Baker has at last found true love.
