About the Book

SK Datta, IPS, retired as Director of the CBI in 1993, has written his experiences for the benefit of readers, police personnel, politicians, professionals, journalists and also those in spiritual quest as beginners. In his 34-year career, his thinking mind focused on innovative ways. As SP of a district he saw inhuman treatment to dalits and became a champion for social justice, which he had already imbibed when as college student along with JN Dixit, former Foreign Secretary, he attended Gandhiji's Wardha Ashram camp and did manual cleaning in Wardha town. He handled and specially deputed a fingerprint expert to lift latent fingerprints of Chopra children as the main evidence in the infamous Billa Ranga case. He wrote in the Statesman in the seventies for launching mass identification programme, which is currently being followed. The gestation period between an idea and its implementation is too long in India. He was assigned to deal with the dreaded gangs of dacoits including Phoolan Devi in Bundelkhand. Each act of bravery and martyrdom of police officers has been focused in the book to keep their memories alive including that of Dhrub Lal Yadav, who sacrificed his life in rescuing three British hostages kept in Saharanpur. In the Central Economic Intelligence Bureau, he devised his own method of detection of large-scale evasion of excise duties. He also observed that public servants were dealt with severely for acquisition of disproportionate assets, while for similar offence classified as 'concealed income' under the Income Tax, affluent class received virtually no punishment, because methods of calculation are different. He has noticed how the investigation and prosecution of Syed Modi murder case, Anti-Sikh riots of 1984, Bhopal Gas Tragedy and other cases became difficult due to political interference. The Rajiv Gandhi murder, a blind case initially, carries his own and SIT's contribution. His last challenging case was to supervise the investigation of the Security Scam cases. The description of all these cases in the book make it very interesting as well as informative. SK Datta served in CBI for more than 15 years holding many key posts. In his long career in CBI he was involved in supervising a number of complicated politically oriented murder cases, bank frauds, terrorist cases having international ramifications, etc etc. He presented papers at world forums on issues like international terrorism, underground banking (Hawala), drug trafficking and organized crime. He was a member of the UN Observer Group on drug trafficking in South East Asia. After retirement, he attended three Working Group meetings sponsored by the Council for Security Cooperation in Asia Pacific at Manila, Jakarta and Bangkok in 2003-04. He was a regular contributor to newspapers, co-author in several books like 'Pakistan Trap', 'Pakistan at the Crossroads', 'Annual Security Review 2002' and the principal author of the book titled 'Pakistan: From Jinnah to Jehad' which were well received in the academic world. While in service, he kept his search for spiritual quest a secret. He had opportunities to meet some of the great spiritual masters. He has faith in Ayurveda and Yoga and written about them from his personal experiences.
