The war of independence begins in Santiago de Cali and Popayan with the creation of the battalions of Cali and the army of Santa Fe. The base of the battalion is the disciplined militia of Cali and the military political orientation of the caleños and vallecaucanos. Colonel Antonio Baraya and Lieutenant Atanasio Girardot with the Santa Fe officers stay at the Hacienda Cañasgordas. This becomes the headquarters of the patriot army. From the Hacienda Cañasgordas the army troops leave for the first victory in the battle of Bajo Palacé (March 28 of 1811). The royalist army of the governor of Popayán Miguel Tacón y
