Der Konsument, bis zum Anfang der neunziger Jahre häufig nur als Abnehmer am Ende von Wertschöpfungsprozessen bewertet, und vor allem seine Bedürfnisse gewinnen immer mehr an Bedeutung. Der Ansatz der ECR, also der Vernetzung von Wertschöpfungsketten und deren Ausrichtung an Kundenbedürfnissen, ist seither aus modernem Management nicht mehr wegzudenken. Im Rahmen des CM wird durch die Neustrukturierung und strategische Führung von Warengruppen aus Verbrauchersicht eine Differenzierung vom Wettbewerb und somit eine stärkere Kundenbindung generiert. Ausgangspunkt bildet ein Überblick über die erschwerten Rahmenbedingungen von Industrie, Handel und Verbraucher. Dargestellt werden zudem die frühen Lösungsansätze im Vertikalen Handelsmarketing und die Gründe für ihr Zurückbleiben hinter den Erwartungen. Da der Ansatz der ECR eine auf diesen Erkenntnissen fußende Erweiterung des Vertikalen Marketings bildet, folgt eine eine Betrachtung ihrer Basisstrategien und deren Wirkungen auf Wertschöpfungsketten und das Absatzmarketing. Hauptaugenmerk dieser Arbeit liegt auf dem dem CM als eine der Grundlagen der ECR. Neben einer Definition wird der neunstufige Prozessablauf ebenso dargestellt wie strukturelle Veränderungen im Rahmen der organisatorischen Implementierung im Unternehmen. Wie in dieser Arbeit gezeigt wird, ist die konsequente Ausrichtung auf die Kundenbedürfnisse ein elementarer Grundsatz im modernen Management der Konsumgüterbranche. Die Umsetzung des CM im Rahmen der ECR hilft dabei sich über die Neuordnung der Sortimente in hart umkämpften Märkten vom Wettbewerb abzuheben und den Point of Sale zum Point of Difference auszubauen.
